Elm Park Kid Unless Dai deliberately drags us under, it's highly unlikely that we'd actually lose the club. There are plenty of rich people out there looking to get a foothold in English football and Reading would look a fairly attractive prospect once the owner debts have been cleared. Our PAYE bill can't be that high. It's known that Mike Ashley is after another club for one.

Yeah, the fact we don't own our stadium and training ground is an issue. But Derby didn't and a deal was reached. We might not be as big a club as Derby, but we're big enough.

It obviously just depends on what owners we get. If we get someone like Mike Ashley, with deep enough pockets, then yeah that's not the worst owner we could have and we know we'd be spending within our means.

The issue is, if we end up with owners like Bradford or Portsmouth, we could be languishing between L1 and L2 for years like both of those clubs, because that's what they can afford. I would like to think this wouldn't be the case because we've got some good assets, but it's entirely possible.

I'd be interested to know more about Bradford. They pull on 15k attendances in L2 and should easily be too big for the league, but have been there for a while. Living nearby, there is not much anger or frustration at this underachievement. I suspect that when you've been pushed to the brink, you're happy just to have a club to go and support every Saturday.

But that idea doesn't sit comfortably for me with Reading. If a new owner wants us to be self sustainable, we should be able to achieve top L1 / lower Championship. If they're willing to underwrite modest losses, top half Championship with an outside shot at the golden ticket. The idea of us becoming Bradford doesn't sit pretty.

Of course, it would be the mother of all rebuilding jobs. Which of our remaining players who stick around in L2? And can a club in such a stage of transition attract talent to immediately compete at the top? Plus add in clubs like Salford and Wrexham with money and ambition. So perhaps it would be 4 - 5 years in L2. But it wouldn't change my view that it would be a major underachievement long term.

Their owners aren't that invested in the club and, whilst their fanbase is strong, they pull in larger crowds due to ticket prices being low (or they have been in recent years). Their actual income isn't that impressive for what they pull in. I know a few who believe they should be higher, but I think there is a bit more of an "acceptance" that they are where they deserve to be. Some believe they should be at least Championship based on size of ground and fanbase, whereas others say they aren't because it's been 20 years since they've played at that level.

Obviously it does all depend who comes in. If it is someone like Ashley, then yes we should be able to work our way back to the Championship. If it's fan-owned then that becomes much different. Salford and Wrexham I feel will hit a brick wall with their owners. Yes ambitious, but some ex-footballers and Hollywood owners, whilst rich, don't scratch the surface to some clubs. Look at ourselves, Dai has pumped something like £200m into the club over his tenure and that's been at Championship level, there is no way Salford or Wrexham's owners can compete with that type of spending.

Wrexham could get out of L1, at which point they will realise that Hollywood bucks are pocket change in the race for the PL.

Most bookies still have us in the top 5 to be promoted

Is there anywhere us ITK-ers can go full Judas and bet on relegation or bottom half finish? A brief google turned up no results for these markets in league 1.

Unless the accounts are fraudulantly wrong - the club do still own the training ground.

Would imagine when they do release the markets which is nearer the start of the season we won't be offered. Just too much market uncertainty with possible points deductions and various embargoes.

This is 100% correct. Amazing how many fans believe what they want to believe, rather than understand the facts (which are well presented by STAR’s review every season). The only thing Dai doesn’t own fully is the land around the stadium which still belongs to Royal Elm Park, which is 75% owned by the Thais. Dai was trying to sell the club’s 25% to himself and it is that transaction (which didn’t actually com0lete) that cost the club 6 points and relegation

It's nice to see that Michael Eisner (Portsmouth owner) based in California takes time out with his son (also involved at Portsmouth) to speak to fans and answer questions directly. As you may recall just over a decade ago Portsmouth were a hated horrendous cr@ppy little eyesore of a club sinking without trace down the leagues and paying for their ill-gotten "success". But now under the Eisners they seem to be a well run community organisation on the up and something to which Reading can only aspire. Time changes everything, just have to get through these grotty seasons and management and rise again. Wonder if Mr Eisner has any mates looking to invest over here?

But, of course, the only way they got to that state was their supporters rescuing them and being the "buyer of last resort" when they were in administration and had been so damaged by a series of toxic owners that they were unsaleable because there was nothing of any value in the club except its name and history.

I've said it many times - every toxic owner that comes in damages a football club that little bit more and limbers it with more debt so that the likelihood of it being bought by a non-toxic owner gets smaller and smaller with every sale. We're smack bang in the middle of that cycle of damage right now.

In the moneyball game that exists today. Clubs are little more than shell vehicles for the mega rich to take punt at achieving the big time and reaping the rewards. Even the Saudis are focussed now on building their own super league. As with golf. They know that the huge riches on offer will attract footballers over there to play. The TV rights being sold globally is the prize. There's no value in a club's history. Fans are just customers. The Premier league may have had its day. Just as Serie A once did. Now just a shadow of once what it was.

The golf worked out well for them!

Think expectations have been as dampened by Dai Yongge as the British summer weather has been.

Hopefully we can get the tax sorted and get some solid signings in. If we can bring 5-6 more in who fit us we could push for playoffs. I'll take a year of mediocrity if it allows us to start building a new side that can challenge next season with a new owner at the helm.

We'll see some painful and embarrassing defeats though

13-16th place if we go into the season as we are

9-12th if we sort the tax, register the new players and bring in 2-3 more

Or are you saying bottom half if we go into the season as we are, top half if we sort the tax, register the new players and bring in 2-3 more?

This month on and off the pitch will indicate where we might finish. Get some signings in and a few wins then top 6 isn't out of reach.

Sensible expectations management from Selles here. Not "we're going straight back up" talk.

I feel like this is the footballing equivalent of Brexit.

Ian ( ) promised us that going down would be good for the club and we’d bounce back better.
Feels like that was project Unicorn

I didn't promise anything, and we haven't played a minute in L1 yet.

Probably as he doesn't want to promise promotion then get sacked by Christmas if we aren't pissing the league.

You did say we'd be better off with relegation. Not that it matters now anyway, we'll never know if staying up could have led to better fortunes with a new owner coming etc.
