A momentus season?

by Snowflake Royal » 07 Aug 2024 12:36

We seem ever closer to the fabled new owners. Led, apparently, by a man with experience and success behind him.

We've kept out best players. We've kept our manager. Pre-season has gone well.

Could it be, for the first time in more than ten years, the same man will pick the team for the first and last game of the season, two seasons in a row?

Can we whisper those forbidden words... consistency, stability...

Or have I just done a massive cmon'urz and guaranteed Selles will be gone by November?

Forget promotion, forget play offs. Please can we just do well enough that we're all happy with Selles and he stays the whole season...

Last season was actually my favourite for many years. I do have a really positive feeling about this season, but I am worried about daring to dream.

As long as we’re competitive and the team continues to improve under Selles I’ll be happy. Also, no points deductions and not being in a relegation battle will be a major improvement.

It's incredible it's been as long as it has since we've kept a manager for two complete seasons (had to check, but it was the first McDermott spell). Selles is already the fourth longest serving manager since the first McDermott sacking (ten permanent managers) and only one of four to survive for a full calendar year.

Unless we've basically lost every game by November or Selles gets poached by a Championship side, I don't see much of a reason for Selles to replaced this season. If we have an underwhelming season, it's likely due to the squad not having reinforcements in the summer. I can't see us having as bad a start to the season as we did last time, so I'd be surprised if we don't have a comfortable mid-table season at the very least (possibly better).

Selles seems to have learned a lot from the first third of last season and isn't afraid to give our young academy players a chance. He's brought a connection back between the fans, playing staff and coaching staff. I think he's ultimately been the best manager we could've had in these circumstances.

+1 to all of this.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if we did sell one of our best players this summer if the takeover happens in time. Someone like Azeez, for example, who only has a year left on his contract and has already had interest from the Championship. Can't see it happening unless the takeover happens and we could bring in a replacement, but part of being a sustainable club is boxing clever with our transfers both in and out. Something we used to be pretty good at.

We’re going up btw. Just thought I’d let everyone know before the season starts.

Yeah, we definitely need to start selling fairly regularly again.

Could see Azeez going for a big wedge in January if we aren’t in the hunt.

A "big wedge"? He walks free in 9 months time.

Not if new owners offer him a new deal….perhaps a 1 year extension

January sales do have a premium though and there's a decent chance a Championship or even bottom PL club tries to buy their way out of trouble. And if he's flying, he wouldn’t be the worst choice.

He could always sign a new contract if a deal goes through too
