Smith misses Azeez. Kelv and Cem are not 'beat your man' type wingers - getting to the byline, get a cross in, Smith tap's in from the six yard line. Both are inside forwards, looking to cut in and get shots off. Also, having Wing in the DCM position has reduced our creativity in the middle of the park, last season he would often slip ball in behind the defenses for smith to run onto. That isn't happening this season. Smith is an off the shoulder type striker, not a back to goal type of striker. This is why imo he is not looking as affective in games this season.

with regards to kelvin. he's young and going to make mistakes. if he were the finished article he wouldn't still be playing for Reading. He has all the attributes to be playing in a higher division. but he is greedy at times, but i think that's just because he's a CF by trade and they inherently are. He needs to learn there is more required from him in these forwards positions. It will come.

With the greatest of respect, I think Ehibhatiomhan absolutely is a "beat your man" type player. Not since the great Jimmy Kébé have I seen someone dribble past multiple players so often. Sometimes he tries it a bit too much, but I'd rather he fails a few times in and around the opposition box than not try at all.

He beats his men and gets his crosses in (left footed) and gets his shots away (right footed). He tracks back. In terms of his impact on how Smith plays, I kind of feel he (Smith) needs to be smarter with his runs if he's being marked so closely.

As for Campbell, can't figure him out. Partly, and I don't know why this is, I don't care so much.

Kelv’s chances created stands at just 35% compared to other left sided players in league 1. But in the top 65% of shots taken for someone who plays on the left side. Which would very much indicate he is an inside forward rather than a beat your man winger looking to get crosses into the box. This is also shown by just the one assist this season

Perhaps we're using the same words (beats his man) to mean slightly different things. The way I mean it, it means going past / dribbling past one or more opponents, not necessarily resulting in a cross into the box, or a direct chance created.

The stats are all fine and good, but just using my eyes, I can see he beats his man frequently, as in , he successfully dribbles past opponents. Not all of these results in chances created - sometimes it's a lay off to the overlapping full back, sometimes he misplaces a pass, and sometimes he tries to beat one too many. But he brings something that is rare in recent RFC history - a genuine enthusiasm to run at opponents with the ball at his feet.

I wonder what Garcia's contract situation is. It seems we live season to season for academy contract currently. Would be great to get him on a 5 year deal then sell him to a Championship club in 2026 or so for £3m + sell on. Or if we get promoted ourselves, hang on until he's 21 and sell him to the PL for £15m+.

Esteban Thought we were decent in patches, did enough to win and there were some decent individual performances. We seem to hold on to the ball for too long sometimes, maybe that's inexperience, not sure.

One bug bear of mine is the number of crosses we concede though. I haven't seen any stats, but it feels like we let the opposition get the ball out wide too easily and whilst we're OK at defending the box, we're not great at it. Something to work on.

I was at the wrong end for our first two goals, should their keeper have done better?

On your "bug bear" I feel that under so many managers and in the 3 different divisions we have always allowed other teams to get crosses in from out wide.
Sometimes we have been punished and more often we haven't but , like you, I wish our full-backs would go tighter to opposition wide players and did so much more to prevent crosses.

Pleased with the result last night but a dull watch.

Good first half performance, but a fairly lacklustre second half. Burton are probably the worst side we've played this season and will certainly be in the relegation picture come May.

Garcia was impressive at left-back - looked strong and composed. Happy to see Campbell get a couple of goals; he looks to be settling into the side. Smith remained quite isolated and quiet throughout the game, but the movement and header was great for his goal.

Would've liked to see a few more of the younger players come off the bench with about ten minutes to go - thinking Akande (on earlier), Wareham and Rushesha.

The quick passing looked effective when we did it, but only really happened in limited spells. Our passing was better than the last couple of matches in general.

Rotherham should be a much tougher test on Saturday, even if they've had a relatively poor start.

We all see the game differently. I’ve not said you are right or wrong, just shared stats that counter your argument. There are no right or wrong answers. It’s all subjective and our own opinions.

Also his dribble success, cross success and crossing accuracy would also indicate he’s not an effective winger.

This is why stats aren't always helpful.

Kelvin frequently tries to go outside his man, to the byline and then pull it back across.

Unfortunately he sometimes takes a touch too many. And they're blocked a lot. Defenders have been a bit wiser to it last season. And Smith and Knibbs(or whoever) have generally made runs in the box that are essentially impossible to find, rather than the ones that would work with those pull backs.

Kelv is just a few small tweaks away from being a real handful at this level. As it is, he is still our biggest general threat imo

He’s worked hard on that left foot, he has a great right foot, pace, power, height and work rate

He looks bigger and stronger this season and he’s an absolute nightmare for a full back 1 on 1. Even if you can get a foot in he’ll probably bulldoze through you

He needs to be able to last a whole game, and continue to improve his decision making but he’s not far off

Looked like a kid trying to be big and clever in front of his mates. Stewards didn't take kindly to him trying to evade them in the stands.

Hopefully he gets a ban.

Yep, Big Clive had to wrestle a few of the kids in the stand out the way as he piled into the stand after him. Not sure if they got the lad who ran on the pitch, but certainly one of his mates (white cap) got escorted out by stewards at the end

Noticed it seems to happen about every six or seven games now. Quite pathetic, especially as it seems these people do get arrested (as evidenced by the arrest statistics for last season).

I noticed Burton often doubled up on him as they recognised his threat which should have meant more space and time for other players

‘Still around’ as in being head honcho on the response team.
Glad to hear he’s still around in terms of existing !

Yeah +1 for that. At times he can look almost unplayable at this level. Just not consistent enough yet
