MATCHWATCH : Fleetwood Town (h)

by Sutekh » 30 Oct 2024 07:18

When : Saturday November 2 2024, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Cup time and the magic is looming. It’s cup weekend and Reading have the chance to earn some money, yes £45000 is what it is about, pocket that and you get a chance to shoot for £75000 and the all too common draw of a visit to Man Utd. Reading won’t win the competition so maximising the prize money (see winnings table below) is what it is about and hopefully Reading are actually equipped to do something other than match the inexcusably pathetic showings of recent years that have seen the club done over by 2 non league sides in the last 3 years.

First round proper winners (40) £45,000
First round proper losers (40) £15,000
Second round proper winners (20) £75,000
Second round proper losers (20) £20,000
Third round proper winners (32) £115,000
Third round proper losers (32) £25,000
Fourth round proper winners (16) £120,000
Fifth round proper winners (8) £225,000
Quarter-final winners (4) £450,000
Semi-final winners (2) £1,000,000
Semi-final losers (2) £500,000
Final runners-up (1) £1,000,000
Final winners (1) £2,000,000

Visitors to the SCL are Fleetwood Town from Division 4 (league 2) so Reading will be favourites which is something they haven’t handled at all well in recent seasons. The cod army are 15th in their division so haven’t started brilliantly and are on a run of 0 wins in their last 5 league games. Their last win was a 6-2 victory at Walsall back at the beginning of October though so have capabilities if there’s any hint of Reading having AFC Charity in town.

Fleetwood have, though, won 3 of their 8 away games in all competitions and lost just twice so perform rather better on the road than Reading. Ronan Coughlan is averaging a goal every other game with 5 strikes from 10 games, midfielder Marty Virtue is next highest scorer with 3. Fleetwood did draw 1-1 away at Stoke in the league cup earlier in the season which is a probable marker of what to expect from them on Saturday. Charlie Adam is now manager at the club so provides the “former royal” connection, let’s hope he is left not wanting to return any time soon.

Finally, the game has to be decided on the day thanks to the FA giving in to elite clubs and banning replays instead of doing what they should have and just telling them to go and get stuffed, so expect penalties if it’s all square at the final whistle.

Reading are starting to build quite an injury list as Yiadom, Dorsett, Clarke, Ryan and Abrefa have been joined by Sam Smith (who has a “big foot” and is likely out for several weeks) and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan who picked up a knock in the dismal showing at Stockport and faces a scan on his hip later this week. Mbengue and Knibbs also received knocks by the look of things but they may well be scheduled to be “rotated” anyway.

Referee

Paul Howard

Previously

06 Feb 24 > Stevenage 0-1 Reading

Historically

No cup games against the cod army, just the one abysmal home league showing from about a year ago to get revenge on.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Love a good cup run me, got to field our strongest team, and hope Sam Smith is fit.

Yes, I can see a team like this being put out (and potentially losing)

Would be good to see if either of these full backs can put in a good performance and claim a first-team start as I'd prefer to see Craig as the CDM.

Could that possibly be the smallest side that we have ever put out.?

The fact that mine is only the 4th post in this topic shows how disinterested the fan base is, knowing that the club will put out a token side just to fulfil the fixture rather than see this as a chance to bring in much needed funds and, just as importantly give us fans the hope of progressing and getting one glamourous game in a season of not much else (we already more or less forfeited the League Cup) .

Unfortunately recent injuries mean that despite yet another international break and rest for most of our players shortly we will play a makeshift side and those of us who look forward to cup games will feel so let down because the side will be one born of necessity rather than desire.

You never know though, I was one of many who, in the days of Bryn, didn't expect that 1-1 draw at Old Trafford so maybe our 2nd eleven will do the business tomorrow and I will be one of the few making the journey up for the 3rd week on the trot but glad that it is an orthodox kick-off time for a change.

Its the way it is now across all the leagues.

Even if we make it to R3 and draw a big 6 club, or anyone else for that matter, we will be playing against a mix of bench warmers and academy players. The levels of fitness required now, as against when all sides fielded a first choice 11 for all first team fixtures, make squad rotation essential in the cups.

Mind you. we're unlikely to go up, and unlikely to go down, and our away form is terrible anyway, so playing the 1st team wouldn't be massive probelm for our season.

It always gets me when you get mid table premier league clubs prioritising the league over the cup, when they ought to be thinking they have a decent chance of winning the thing.

Overall though, it's just sad how the cup has diminished. Fans used to look forward to the FA Cup. Ties got bigger crowds than league games would. Now I don't even bother watching the final most years.

Tamworth, the first to bag 45k at the expense of Huddersfield (lol, that’ll teach you for relegating us etc etc).

 Whatever happened to Tamworth Royal?

Can someone smarter than me let me know about the rules for the Bristol Motors cup?

I believe there’s a rule that you have to play a certain amount of players from your previous game in the next trophy game. Does this include previous league game or will Saturdays FA Cup game count ?

Whatever the answer is might influence what side we see tomorrow .

The rules state:
7.4 Qualifying Player means any Player who:
----7.4.1 had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture (as defined below);
----7.4.2 subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture;
----7.4.3 is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season;
----7.4.4 has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season); or
----7.4.5 is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.
7.5 First Team Fixture means the League Competition, Premier League, EFL Cup or FA Challenge Cup (but shall, in the context of Rules 7.4.3 and 7.4.4 only, also include this Competition).
FA Cup matches count as the most recent first team game, so anyone who starts tomorrow will count as a qualifying player for Cheltenham.

I imagine the team tomorrow (taking into account who played for the U21s tonight) will be something along the lines of:
CBC
Ahmed - Holzman - Dean - Garcia
Elliott - Spencer - Savage
Camara - Wareham - Tuma

That looks about right. Interested in seeing how Ahmed and Spencer do.

Good to see that the injury fears for Knibbs and Mbengue are un- founded as both on bench.

Do we know how much Fleetwood have rotated? A full strength L2 side would fancy their chances against that XI.

Not a million miles away from what I thought, although did have Rushesha injured in my mind - which gives an opportunity to rest Garcia.

Anyone know who St Louis is? Not a name I’m familiar with - an U18?

Two changes from midweek, although they apparently have a number of pre-existing injuries in defence.

Saint-Louis does play for the U 18’s and has been on the bench for the U 21’s- as he was last night.

It’s T’shay St. Louis, he is a defender, beyond that I don’t know.

Hope St Louis gets on. He came on against Monaco, I struggled to differentiate him from Bowdrey and McMillan who came on at the same point but I think he was on the left wing and did a couple of good things. He might have been the left back though.

Rushesha isn't going to break into our team in midfield so hopefully he shows us what he can do at full back. Would be great to have him as an option to rest Garcia/move Craig into midfield.

Lot resting on Elliott and Savage, they're the two who have to step up and make the difference.
