Snowball
Clyde1998 I've had a look at the basic goalkeeping stats.

Despite everyone criticising Button in goal, we've conceded basically as much with him in goal as we have with Pereira in goal.

Button - Pld 37 - GA 55 - 59.7 mins per GA
Pereira - Pld 9 - GA 14 - 54.6 mins per GA

Even without that stoppage time mistake against Blackpool, it would been slightly in Button's favour (Pereira would've been on 58.8 mins per GA without it).

I maintain Pereira is a much better shot stopper, but Button is better at distribution and organising the defence - things that prevent pressure on the goal in the first place.

I feel Button has been unfairly criticised because of his early season errors. His minutes per goal conceded dropped to 70.0 after Shrewsbury until he got ill before of Derby (40% better than his record until Shrewsbury).

Any thoughts people have on this?

Not a lot of games for Pereira and in one single game he shipped 5 goals

Without that one TEAM hammering he'd be P8 GA 9 GA 80+

This is definitely how to use statistics properly.

What do Button’s stats look like if you exclude all the games where we conceded a goal?

Played 8, goals against zero, ∞ minutes per goal conceded.

His figures get even better if you include game where we conceded but exclude the exact seconds we conceded.

Do we have stats for CBC and Andresson to compare to Button - I realise Andresson is out on loan but that expires at the end of October so could be in the running from November onwards and apparently is doing well

Also, CBC or Button next match?

Well CBC has played 2 league and 3 league cup games, conceding four goals, of which half came from his own error.

If you're looking to the future, and not hoping for a top 6 finish, I think we persist with Boyce-Clarke for another couple of games.

If we want every point we can get now, it should be Button.

People on Twitter calling for the return of Andresson is ludicrous. His loan at Carlisle last season was a horror show, and he's now on loan in the Icelandic 2nd division, which is presumably part time given their population is approximately the same size as Berkshire. I suspect Button is the least bad option.

Of the bad decisions in the past decade, how highly does losing Sal Bibbo rank? While the academy continues to be essential for our first team, all we seem to be getting in the GK department is youngsters who are demonstrably not first team ready. Who knows how different CBC and Andresson could look with a better coaching set up. Southwood is the closest we've come to a good home grown keeper, and we let him go too. Tbh I'm not convinced he's a good L1 keeper either, but probably better than Button, CBC and Andresson.

Probably huge. Have we produced a good goalkeeper since he's left? Prior to him leaving, we almost had too many decent goalkeepers coming through.

That said, have we been allowing our 'high potential' young keepers an opportunity to go out on loan in the past decade? I feel we've been content at leaving them in the U21s too long and letting them plateau. The same is true for some outfield players, albeit they could at least get opportunities in the first team from the bench.

Reading Football Club and Jökull Andrésson have officially come to a mutual agreement over the termination of the goalkeeper’s contract with the club.

Had a great (heralded) loan spell at Morecambe (preceded by a decent run at Exeter) a few years back, after that, nothing.

Now we have reduced the playing staff by one, will we be allowed to sign a new player? If so, I hope we will be able to sigh a left back.

I imagine it simply makes no sense to have as many keepers as we do. He wasn't going to get in the team before his contract expired. Shame he hasn't made it here, but hopefully this is a good decision for both sides.

But then most of those that we’ve had at left back in recent years have made us sigh.

Bibbo was a full-time staff member 2006-2015 (previously was only part time!). In that period we had three academy goalkeepers make first team appearances: Ben Hamer, Mikkel Andersen, and of course Alex McCarthy. Hamer and McCarthy both went on to make Premier League appearances, Andersen played European football (albeit from the Danish league, which he was on course to do before we signed him anyway). Bibbo also deserves huge credit for Adam Federici.

Since 2015, the same period of time, we've again had three academy goalkeepers make first team appearances: Southwood, CBC, and Tom Norcott. Southwood, safe to say, is a League One standard goalkeeper after being expected to be something better. CBC has stalled in his development and again doesn't look like he'll reach the expected heights. We could add Lewis Ward, an England youth international who is now bench warming in League Two, as well as Jokull of course. Slightly worrying that we've had three England youth internationals who looked good at 18 but hadn't progressed by the time they were 21.

Think you're missing off Feds. Sure he wasn't an academy player, but we signed him as a 20 year old from nowhere. It was a big success for our GK coaching that he broke into the first team and played such a big part in promotion.

I'd put him and McCarthy as the biggest successes, but if you look at Hamer's career he could also have done well for us with the right opportunity (issue being there were very strong options ahead of him at the breakthrough age). Ashdown was also around a few years earlier.
