Most ever losses in the FA Cup?

by JR » 11 Feb 2010 23:22

A work colleague told me today that Reading have lost more games in the FA Cup than any other team.

In summary, this is because we have never won the cup and were founded shortly before the FA came in to being.

Does anyone know if this stat is true?

the stat is true, although your second sentence doesn't quite capture it

no league club has entered the FA Cup more times than us - Notts County have entered it as many times as us, but they won it in 1894 meaning they've lost one fewer match than us

incidentally, I now discover (via Wiki) that when Notts County won the trophy, their player Jimmy Logan scored the first FA Cup final hat-trick, and they were the first club from outside of the top divison to win it

/banks those nuggets for future quiz nights

Don't Marlow Town share the record with us ?

Don't think so as I think there were a couple of seasons they didn't enter it.

Plus I think the record counts for the FA Cup "proper" and not qualifying rounds.

Just on a technicality I don't actually think it's true, I think we're equal with Notts County as we scratched from the FA Cup in 1879 for some reason when we were due to play Henley.

I always know it that we have the worst FA Cup record because we have entered it the most times without winning.

Every team except one will lose (only) once in the FA Cup every year so this stat is virtually meaningless.

A more interesting stat is our constant failure to progress. If you gave 1 point for reaching each additional round beyond the one you started in we would surely have the fewest number of points for any club in England.

I don't know about that.

Teams like Carlisle, Torquay and York cant have progressed that much. Where we have reached the semi-final almost 100 years ago!

We have been knocked out more times than any other team due to entering more times than any other club except one, However that club won the trophy one year.

Correct - so long as you specify cureent League club. Marlow (and Maidenhead ?) have entered every since year since it started in 1871. Reading didn;t start til 1877, same as Notts.

Incidentally I have a relation who posed the quiz question "Which club has the most wins in the FA Cup?". I believe the answer to be a non league club but have yet to work out which one. Anyone have any ideas?

It wasn't Stockport, it was Sheffield FC and they may well have played pick-up games among their own members - married v singles, smokers v non-smokers etc

Kettering Town must be in contention. Found out from highlights today that they have the most goals (923) of any club.

Believe Maidenhead United have lost the most games in the FA Cup of all the teams that have entered it.
