MATCHWATCH : Northampton Town (h)

by Sutekh » 22 Dec 2024 11:07

When : Thursday December 26th 2024, 3pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

A home game on Boxing Day again and it’s a visit from relegation battling Northampton Town with which to contend. This fixture is rarely anything other than a dour, tedious reminder of just why clubs don’t want to be in the two basement divisions as goals and excitement tend be very scarce and quite often what you expect to be a comfortable home game turns out to be the proverbial disappointing splat as you realise that Charity FC have turned up late for Christmas with a whole sack full of gifts to be unwrapped.

Reading have now gone 4 hours of football without scoring so let’s face the fact that this game could well be prime charity territory. Meanwhile Northampton have only won 1 of their last 8 league games and seem to be uncontrollably collapsing with their latest return being a 5-0 stuffing at home from Charlton. However they have managed a point at both Brum and Stockport and taken all 3 points at Huddersfield so they do have some capability about them, even if it is seemingly a little "off par" at the moment.

After the last couple of seasons that has seen midfielder Sam Hoskins deliver around 40 league goals things have gone a little quiet which is a big part of the Cobblers' problem, together with a very large turn over in playing staff in the summer and the subsequent resignation of their manager, Jon Brady, after a relatively successful 3 years at the helm. Ian Sampson has taken over caretaker duties but after picking up 3 points in his first game the club have lost 3 games on the bounce in all competitions without scoring and conceding eleven.

Other Northampton midfielders have been filling in the Hoskins void of leading goalscorers; Cameron McGeehan (6) and former Reading starlet Tariq Fosu-Henry (3). Also on their payroll is Nesta Guinness-Walker who I’m sure will have a point to prove if you let him.

Reading are without Elliott until March and WiFi until February. Abrefa and Yiadom are back on the training pitches but probably still need another week or two before being involved. Mbengue should be available again after concussion.

Referee

Scott Simpson

Previously

23 Nov 24 > Peterborough United 1-2 Reading

Historically

This is the 46th season shared with the Cobblers with league games going back to 1921. Since then Reading have won 31 and drawn 10 home games but Reading have only beaten Northampton once at home in the last 5 attempts they've played in all competitions. Goals tend to be scare too with both sides having managed just 2 goals each across those 5 games.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the Mad Stad
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Red button/NOW app
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Dean has to start, even though it means a glacial centreback pairing again. And we need to look at an alternative to Garcia.

I'd like to see Abrefa at least back on the bench, but starting might be a bit soon.

Northampton are not good so maybe we mainly stick and just hope for a better performance and result. Buying time for Yids and Abrefa.

Do we know how long the rest are out?
Rushesha, Akande, Dorsett....?

Rushesha in particular would be a huge help.

Dorsett is another 3 weeks away I think. No idea what’s wrong with Akande or Rushesha, don’t even think anyone in the media has asked Noel about them.

Noel is also 42 years old on the day of this game.

On the other hand, win this and Cambridge and a lot of people look very foolish.

I imagine reality will fall between nil poits and 6 though.

Highlights from last seasons away game.

I think my favourite bits are where you can hear the Reading fans start to cheer a Button save. Double bubble Button on the third.

I spent the entire second half looking at the massive Wagamama's and thinking what else I could be doing with my time.

That said, #JQRoyalsOnTour

Do you know something we don’t about the Mansfield game being played?

Northampton and Cambridge are the two 'easy' games on paper. Mansfield isn’t.

They're in bad form, but with a recent win. And we all know teams from about 5th down to lower half often go on little runs of bad form then good form. So we'll probably hit their recovery, like we did with Blackpool and Lincoln.

We only really need to win most of the 'easy' games and bag a few draws.

Yep, the points come in handy, (and not wishing to jump-on the panic/hysterical doom bus, but) wasn’t Blackpool meant to be a ‘banker’?

There are no ‘easy games’….but then, most of us appreciate that.

Keep up the struggle Noel and kids

Why would it have been a banker, they were midtable.

Not from me but from certain quarters we are already reaching a must win scenario for Noel.

Which is rather mental considering its only his fourth game in charge.

Not the quarters that matter. Nobody is going to sack him.

I'm not sure you can say it's mental as he hasn't won any of them. And the last home game we got outplayed and tonked 3-0.

We usually dont do well over Xmas but this game could start a spiral that will be hard to get out of, particularly if the expected fire sale happens in January.

No, it's definitely mental.

It's mental for various reasons:

a manager popular with the squad has left along with popular coaches
Hunt was left with no coaches and has had to bring in 2 new ones, one promoted and one coming back to the club probably as a favour
Hunt has had to deal with more injuries in 3 league games than we have had all season
We have played away games at 1st and (at time of playing 7th)
Our kids were 30 seconds away from progressing in the EFL Trophy, playing with 9 men.
A transfer window opens in a week where a number of players may actively be looking to move on

Blackpool was not great but 1 point from the 2 away games played is probably about par given the above. If we are still winless by the FA Cup then some rumblings could be understandable esp if not playing well but far too early for that.

He failed to win any of his matches in caretaker charge in 22/23.

Definitely been a bit unlucky with decisions in those games as well

We’ve not played well but I think we’ll grab a win in the next couple of games

Yes, and we were a poor refereeing decision from being 1-1 and a man up vs Lincoln before we went a man down. Even playing badly and at 10 men it wasn't a heavy defeat.
