MATCHWATCH : Blackpool (a)

by Sutekh » 31 Mar 2025 08:24

When : Tuesday April 1 2025, 7.45pm
Where : Bloomfield Road, Seasiders Way, Blackpool, FY1 6JJ
Capacity : 17,338

The rather cr@p away record (17th best in the division) heads north to partake of pleasantries with Blackpool, owners of the current 8th best home record. About the only positive from this is that Blackpool begins with “B” so there’s a chance this might not turn into the likely debacle we all expect.

Blackpool have only lost 2 of their last 18 league games (2-1 at Stockport and 2-1 at home v Leyton Orient) but have drawn 9 of those so it can be said they are a difficult outfit to beat anywhere but then Reading should be more than aware of that after the pretty dreadful performance against them at the SCL. This run has lifted the Tangerines from the lower reaches to the fringes of the play off race and just 5 points behind 6th placed Reading.

Kyle Joseph and Ashley Fletcher provide serious strike threat with 18 goals between them so far. However the biggest threat would appear to be January loan signing (from Stoke) Niall Ennis who has bagged 6 goals in 10(2) appearances already.

Injuries abound with defenders dropping like flies at a fly spray convention. Bindon is ill and unknown if he’ll make it, Craig, Mbengue, Dean, Dorsett, Garcia are still out though Mbengue may well travel.

Other games of note on Tuesday…

Burton v Leyton Orient
Lincoln v Huddersfield
Stockport v Stevenage
Wigan v Bolton

Referee

Aaron Bannister

Previously

Nothing known

Historically

Bloomfield Road has not been particularly hospitable to Reading down the years, the first 5 games played at the venue saw 0 points returned and 22 goals conceded (including the heaviest defeat there of 7-0) so there is something by way of a precedent already set for cr@p experiences in this part of Lancashire.

There have been 23 league visits in total to this part of the coast and Reading have won on 5 occasions while losing on 13 but haven’t won on any of the last 8 league visits (earning just 2 points) including 3 defeats, conceding 9 goals, in the last 3 visits - so a point would probably be a good outcome for the club.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Now app/Sky red button
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

We actually won 2-0 up there in the FA cup not so long ago, but I appreciate you`re talking about the league, James Earnshaw commented that we`ve not won there since 94. probably our first play-off season.

Earnshaw is rubbish with stats....the 1994 game was a 4-0 win in the 1993-94 promotion season under Mark McGhee, still ranks as one of the top 3 away performances I've seen from us.

Lost my car keys whilst on the Pepsi Max Big One before that game; on the Sunday morning I blagged a hire car, drove down to Wycombe, broke into my flat to get the spare car keys, drove back up to Blackpool before retrieving my car and driving back home to Wycombe....all in torrential rain!

It's not so many years ago that Blackpool fans were fighting to get rid of their toxic owner, the odious Owen Oyston - and fans of lots of clubs went up joined their protest march.

Your experience was a long time ago now pre smartphone i guess so would have been harder....

But when i recently positioned my car keys right where the boot closes, thus squishing down the door lock button with all doors closed and boot closed, a locksmith could be summoned from my smartphone google search within 20 minutes and had picked the lock within 45 seconds of arriving. Only £100 service. I was so impressed.

I would be more worried than impressed, car security really doesn’t seem to be all that - 45 seconds

Lockpicking lawyer on YouTube is some what compelling viewing at the weirder end of the spectrum. There's almost no lock he can't get into in a couple of minutes, usually seconds. Not cars of course, but basically, if you've got a bit of talent and are willing to put the time in to study, there's very little you can't get through quickly.

I think in the future the idea of physical keys to a house rather than a fob will seem weird.

Looking forward to this one. Going to be a good laugh but this will be a stern test. It was Noel Hunt's first defeat as manager, hopefully he'll set us up to nick an early goal and frustrate. Saturday must have given Hunt a bit of a selection headache for this!

Fantastic away day that started well before kick-off as Stockport had earlier dropped points at Cardiff. Brilliant goal from Dylan Kerr, Archie unplayable and Tom Jones playing in what looked like bleached blue shorts from the bottom of the kit bag; and as stated above, applauded off at the end by Blackpool fans.

Sad to see neither Bindon nor Mbengue back but the backline did much better than expected against Peterborough, so hopefully we'll be okay.

Think Stickers will be ok, they're quite a physical, direct side which if anything will suit him more than Sat.
