Mid Sussex Royal
SHORT AND CURLY I remember a game away at Brammall Lane around late 70's early 80's which we lost.
Travelled up on the coaches. After the game we were walked back to the coaches parked some distance away which required a Police escort. This kept us at bay from the United marauding bunch. Then I received a kick and a punch in the back looked behind and realised that some Sheff fans had infiltrated the marching convoy.
I explained to one of the escorting coppers what was going on and was told in no uncertain terms to get back in in the group or get nicked!
I subsequently got laughed at by some of our northern friends who continued to kick and punch out randomly whilst the coppers turned a blind eye!
Happy days

(By the way you never really wore colours then)

Got chased at Crewe. At Newport County I remember running away over car bonnets.
I was also threatened at Pompey by a gimp in a wheel chair  Well I could hardly offer him out could I
Remember Cardiff playing Wokingham which got really hairy, but luckily never had a good hiding.

Who can remember standing on the South Bank at EP when we or the opposition scored and you realised that you were suddenly surrounded by opposing fans. Sheff Wednesday and Barnsley sprang to mind.

There were a few dodgy games in the late 70's early 80's with away fans in the South Bank - Portsmouth & Millwall in particular. Remember the Portsmouth game in 1976/77 relagation season when they charged across the pitch from Town End to Tilehurst End after Steve Hetzke scored.

That's the one I was referring to. You're wrong about Town End to Tilehurst End - it was Southbank to Tilehurst End. They'd taken the Southbank!

Maguire
zummerset the majority of posts are Reading fans getting beaten up and doing naff all about it..if someone punched me (and they have) they wouldn't be feckin laughing about it a minute later. an eye for an eye mtherfcker

Well aren't you the hero

The reality is that the aggressors usually win fights, not the victims. Better reading these memories (which I'm sure are all true) rather than 6 pages of macho posturing.

No mate .. I am nice bloke if you don't cross normal lines and I might let you get away with a liberty but push it and the consequences will be brutal. Lets remember i was a happy peacenik until you started on me. All I am saying is I am a proud Ding fan... happy to accomodate other views but if someone tries to attack me then they will get a commensurate response...........

70s/80s sound like a different world

I shake my head at the state of modern football matches but you lot must feel like it's from a different world.

Not half bud. Serious violence and disorder was de rigeur. Still possible to avoid if you didn't want some but still widespread at the time.

To get an idea of how bad it was, just look at the attendances in the early 80s, not just for Reading. Punch ups are one thing, but when it got worse than that people just deserted the game.

Sound lad Kirbs. He once told me the story about how Sheff U's firm came up to him and a couple of lads, outside the Monk's, and asked where our firm were.

Quick as a flash Steve told 'em to "go to the end of the road, turn left and down on the right find 'em in the Wynford Arms." For those of you who don't know the Wynford was always known for it's gay clientelle, so they've all steamed off like a good 'un, and Kirbs and the lads have fallen around the floor laughing. Priceless.

I never spoke to the guy, but i remember him in the 90s when he used to take a diabled fan to every game and both were in the Rendezvous afterwards. Speaks volumes. Oh and i belive he was the one who samashed home that last minute "equaliser" at Dean Court in 94. Tremendous scenes!

The disabled fella was our old mate Bry, alas, no more as Kirbs (R.I.P both). Kirbs spent a couple of years or more helping Bry, and we all got to know him much better during those years, often travelling to away games in Bry's 'Spaswagon' as we called it, for much mirth and hilarity. I remember Kirbs slotting home the winner at Bournemouth that night. Outstanding. The 'wagon' rolled into Bournemouth at about 11am for the night kick-off. What a day that was. Kirbs was a rough diamond for sure, the business when things were on the off, but he had a side to him that was very touching and loyal, a mark of the gentleman about him. The turn out at his funeral was the mark of the man, that was for sure. Happy memories of both fellas, who are both missed still by those he knew and had the privilege to know them both.

Got kicked leaving the ground at Stockport away late nineties/early noughties (only once and to be honest not very hard, then another of their fans then came and apologised!)

Took my revenge my exiting the car park and aiming my Vauxhall Belmont at full speed at several Stockport supporters crossing the road in front of of me. Sadly the acceleration of a Vauxhall Belmont was so slow I didn't manage to kill any of them (though I have hated Stockport and Jim Gannon especially ever since.)

Yeah no self-respecting hoolie will attack a man with a boner

Got jumped in Exeter city centre in about 1983. When we fought back they kind of lost interest

I got into a scuffle with a bunch of very angry, very northern, very common bolton fans outside Elm Park when we beat them 3-2 with Quinn in goal.

Being delighted with our revenge for 1995 I was giving them a lot of jip (yes I'm older and wiser now).

Despite being about 5 of them rowdy northen guys and only one of me, they for some reason stopped short of actually coming over and lamping me, but gave me some jip back in northernspeak which I don't understand.

Thank God I've grown up and am no longer (too much of) an imbecile.

Brick through the coach window a row in front of me when leaving Gillingham (late 70s?).

Grabbed on the train at Bournemouth Station in the early 80s - had been given a police escort to the station but they decided to leave us to it when the Bournemouth lads turned up! Fortunately the train started to pull out and they decided they didn't want to join us back in Reading so hopped off quick!

Had to dodge loads of flying bricks at Barry Town when the Cardiff boyos decided to turn up to help their cousins!

Narrow escape in a pub at Darlington when their lads turned up and decided to join us inside - got up and walked out through the gathering mob outside, trying to look like a confident localand hoping no one would talk to me and spot my strange accent!

At the same game, things were starting to look nasty in the ground until Kirbs and the Jolly Porter Crew turned up just before kick off and the local 'lads' scarpered!

With the boot on the other foot, I can remember an evening cup tie at Southampton when their supporters decided to ambush the Reading fans on their way back to the station. They clearly hadn't realised that the club had chartered a fairly large football special. It was quite comical seeing them launch their 'attack' , suddenly realise just how many Reading supporters there were and stop dead in their tracks before turning and scattering as fast as they could!

Never realised it was him that scored that equaliser - the sod! Everyone surged forward as we mounted that last minute attack and I lost sight of the ball and players. Next thing I knew, ball was in the back of the net and everyone was celebrating. I just couldn't work out why the ref disallowed our 'goal' and called him every name under the sun! Left the ground very disgruntled and not living in Reading at the time, and without the coverage now available through the web, didn't find out why we'd been denied the goal until the next season!!!

Funny how people remember things differently. The way I recall it, they charged across the pitch and into the Southbank just as the game was about to kick off but they came from the seats adjacent to the Town End. I believe that is how they managed to elude the police!

Away to Manchester City in that legendary 0-0 draw at Maine Road, when Tony Coleman missed a penalty.

Pre- segregation of fans, we were set upon on the way back to Manchester's Piccadilly station by a group who were aggrieved at 'little Reading' having dared to go up to the great Manchester City and draw.

My mate Mel was in the foetal position on the ground being kicked when I naively stepped between them and him, pleading that we were a 'peaceful lot from Reading'. I like to think that it was my physical presence that dispersed them (I was about 50st.) but, realistically, it was the sound of police sirens! :)

Not attacked as such, but walked home from the Cardiff game in 05/06 and was nearly attacked by some Reading fans...had come straight from work so no colours, kept accusing me of being some welsh c*nt. My mate, after laughing at my misfortune (I was picked out as I'm quite tall), unzipped his shirt and showed them his colours. Saw the same group of fans beating the sh*t out of some Cardiff guy in the town centre and were just about to start on his missus when Uncle William turned up.

Same mate of mine got involved in a scarp against Chelsea in the infamous Hunt vs Cech game. Saw a scuffle, ran over, chinned the first guy he saw then ran away again.

I seem to remember Everton causing a lot of trouble in the same season...

Got punched in the face by an Oxford fan in the south bank years ago more of a glancing blow really, did have a swing back, but missed.

Got booted by Sheff Weds fans had to leg it, got kicked by a Charlton fan once, turned round but couldn't see who had done it, dodged a few more but nothing serious.

Considering this was in the 70s and 80s when at some games you seriously feared for your life, relatively unscathed really.
