Steve Coppell - Ex England and Man Utd right winger, one of the best in the game yet made zero appearances due to injury.

That reminds me of Paul Canoville...

It was way back when, but when he joined he was class, real class.
He shone out as someone who played at a higher level.
Left racist Chelsea and was kinda famous when he joined us.

All was well until Swindlehurst mullered him away against Sunderland.

That was disappointing.

Black man ends up on crack and walking with a limp.

Disappointing, but hardly surprising.

Neale Cooper.

Was really excited when he joined (c.92?) at the start of the McGhee revolution.

Unfortunately I imagined the Neale Cooper of the Ferguson Aberdeen team of the 80s pulling the strings in our midfield. Instead we got some imposter with a ridiculous perm wearing an incredibly small pair of shorts who couldn't pass water and seemed to have trouble keeping the ball on the pitch.

Was he the one we bought around that who simply couldn't stay on the pitch?

Bobby Ayre, thought he would score lots of goals, just did n´t, left the club for Weymouth.

Tilehurst End Andy Hughes

Set himself very low standards which he repeatedly failed to live up to.

Let's not open that can of worms  He scored a couple of belters and when let free to roam down the wings he was....ok.

Remember his debut against Hull?

Useless.

Slightly off topic but the only good thing about that game was our kit. Hoops all the way round, white shorts and white socks.

DId someone get sent off for us in that game?

No - It was Reading v Hull in 1991/92 that Neale Cooper made his debut in, and No he didn't have a perm, he had a receeding hairline when he joined, and No we didn't wear hoops in that season. It was the God-awful HAT Painting kit.

Caskey - sorry he was a disgrace. Yes could take a free kick and a penalty, could barely walk and got fatter by the day. He was on the radio the other day saying how his move to Reading was a mistake and ruined his career....you lazy twat, you ruined your career.

Jerry St Clair Mark Reilly is the worst player I've ever seen, but I don't think he could be classed as a big disappointment. I think that honour has to be shared by two local boys who promised big but failed to deliver:

James Lambert and Neville Roach.

I'm sure I saw Neville Roach single-handedly demolish someone (Southend or Swansea, I think?) which led me to rather rashly predict that he'd definitely play for England one day.

Neville Roach should have been amazing. I never saw him have a bad game. Always looked exciting and a threat. Could never understand why he didn't get a decent run in the team and was then let go.

For me, the standout individual who completely failed to live up to the expectation was Bobby Mikhailov. Brilliant goalkeeper for Bulgaria. I really thought that we had signed someone very special. Sadly, he had a heart the size of a pea and just did not do himself justice.

IF he hasn't of had that season then I would have agreed BUT he was immense at that time and ran the entire team. If he'd played at Cardiff against Walsall we'd have won.

*no stuck recordo

I'm also convinced had he scored on his debut and not hit the bar against Watford we might have seen a more consistently good Caskey.

I have to disagree with the Caskey being immense comment. He was mediocre that season at best but scored a lot of goals as a result of taking all the free kicks and penalties. Throughout his entire time at RFC, Caskey would shirk challenges that were 70 - 30 in his favour and he would also consistently hoof the ball to the channels without looking whenever he was closed down by the opposition.

Caskey could take a free kick and clearly had some talent with the ball. His problem seemed to be his approach and his mentality ... and of course his waistline!

Shaun Goater for me.

Brought in by Pardew with a set job in mind, started the season well getting on a scoresheet a few times in the process. Pardew leaves and everything goes to pot, appears to be lazy and can't hit a barn door. Shame really, would've been very interesting to see how he would have done under Pardew for a longer spell.
