No Fixed Abode Yep - he spent his budget on too many poor quality players, instead of bringing in less players with better quality. Simple.
and who were they (these better quality players)?

Why would better quality players ever want to come to Reading?

Were we prepared to pay "better quality" wages?

Anton owns the club

The Chairman runs the club the way he's always run it I suspect, It's probably in his best interests to control the purse strings so that the club is in good financial shape so he can receive his remaining £25m or whatever he's going to get.

The manager can only spend what he's given and he reports into the board, which is chaired by the chairman. The Director of football also reports into the board.

Maybe Anton made the money available to the club but the club did not make it available to Brian? - Anton needs to look at the chain of management not just the guy who coaches the players and gives a list of the ones he wants to capture. Why didn't the director of football offer some direction?

I don't think Madejski has a say in anything. Anton has the final say in everything, as he controls the main stake in the club.

It's also going back to Nicky Hammond, as usual. I hope McDemott takes him to Leeds.

You suspect wrong. SJM is only chairman in name. He doesn't make any calls any more. It's Anton's club now.

andrew1957 For the Brian knockers I would agree that the squad is little stronger than it was when he took over but whose fault is that. He was forced to sell Siggy, Long, Matt Mills etc for loads of money and given little to invest. He invested what he was given and made the best of what he had.

On top of that this season we have been incredibly unfortunate with injuries.

We will never know what he could have done if he was given a lot of money to invest - he simply never had the chance.

Succinct and spot-on.

So it sounds like Anton didn't give us enough last summer, which I think he admitted as much anyway, but we were prepared to in January, although it sounds like (if this is true) we baulked at the fees and/or wages.

Whatever, I hope Anton has learnt he can't do it on the cheap!

Hmmm, read it again almost sounds like McD has contradicted himself - I think to be fair the money was there but they couldn't get the players - ince and sig. I could be wrong and don't mean to offend Nick Blackman but that seemed like a panic buy as Im not convinced we needed another striker

Lol that this is even being discussed.

Brian said several times blatantly throughout the season and after his sacking that he used up all the money available in the summer. Anton cleverly gives little cryptic info away and the usual suspects put 2 and 2 together to get 13.6 believing Anton was begging Brian to spend but Brian flatly refused. What utter stupidity and it bores me to bits AGAIN.

Having said that there is always the possibility that whilst he spent the money available he may have been more pushy and demanding in the summer to get some more funds. Tht would fit both Anton's and Brian's accounts possibly.

January is different as we had the added complication of no one wanting to join but the suggestion that he only used part of his readily available summer budget is beyond ridiculous. Provides good entertainment though readings his persistent BS.

I don't believe a single thing McDermott says any more. So many contradictions spew out of his mouth. He has on many occasions said that this team is good enough to stay up. He was happy with what he had.

The more I hear tripe from him, the more I lose respect for him. He isn't Reading any more and hasn't been for 5 weeks and we're still going on about him

Anton has been with us fully for a short time, it's time to give him a chance, as well as our current manager, not someone managing Leeds.

It's been explained to you and your cronies several times that he was not going to say the squad wasn't good enough and he was unhappy with the budget he had been given. Neither would most, if not all managers, because they would lose the dressing room of players they had and alienate their bosses by doing so in public.

Our current manager knows we are going down but he is not saying it in public, no manager would, because you lose the hearts and minds of the players you have got.

Come on, it's not that difficult to understand, it's football politics and dressing room management psychology 101.

It's also not that difficult to understand that other teams and managers have adapted to the Premiership after coming up from the Championship with the current squad they had, plus added additions, like McDermott and Reading, but he failed miserably. Stop making excuses for him.

Also, all this bullshit about 'punching above our weight', it's such a cop out. Wigan, West Ham, Saints, West Brom, Norwich, Fulham, Swansea, are they also 'punching above their weight'? No. They adapted. We didn't.
