Bit of a schoolboy error from Bri saying he was an owners signing. Should've at least waited a couple of months to see how gr8/shit he turns out.

Bit of a weird one though. How on earth would the Thais, who have limited football knowledge, know about an obscure young player from Poland?

Considering we signed Sa from the same league, was he an owner's signing as well?

As I said, the term'owners signing' doesn't mean much.
Is Brian suggesting he has had no say in this deal ? He's never seen or spoken to the player and has simply been told that the guy is coming ?
Or did an agent approach the Thai's, who passed the contact on to Brian who is ok with it.
It seems n utterly bizarre signing for a foreign owner to 'impose' on a manager. You could see why Anton wanted Pog and Royston for his fantasy team but how much kudos back home will the Thais get when they tell their mates they have Dennis Rakells at their club ?

Do you think that the Thais have a lucky dip of Polish players every window? Perhaps they're determined to build up a Reading following in the local eastern European communities. When that fails they'll start randomly selecting leading Indian players....

Probably better to sign Poles rather than Latvians then....

Charles Watts BM really honest on Rakels. Says this is 2016 - anyone who doesn't believe owners bring in players as well is kidding themselves #readingfc

Still like someone to ask the owners why they think that bringing players to the club irrespective of what the manager wants is a good idea.

You have ask what is the point of employing a manager, then foisting players on him only to sack him when it all goes wrong.

Perhaps SC had more interference than he expected and so it was no wonder he wanted out.

Nameless Just a thought, but who is more likely to spot a Latvian striker playing in Poland ?
1. A guy who has spent most of his post playing career scouting, and has just spent a couple of years heading one of the best global scouting networks in the world
2. A bunch of Thais with little football background and no apparent desire to behinds on with the playing side

Of course the Thai's may have people ringing them and pushing players, of course there may be some longstanding Latvian-Thai diplomatic connection. But generally I'd lean towards this being the sort of player someone with extensive scouting experience would have stumbled across. It may be Brian was told he had to lose Sa and the budget to replace him would be half of whatever we got, but how would Sasima come across an obscure Baltic footballer, and why should she want him at her club ? Unless she's planning ahead for summer barbecues.

Thais apparently. Good shout about the BBQ though

More interference from the Thai's then. CW confirms BM said this is a Thai signing, not his. As was Ferdinand, Sa, Hurtado. For AZ it was Pog and Williams (?). It's just ridiculous. BM gets judged on results but doesn't have full control of who comes in, or what type of charachter is brought into the group!

But then most managers don't.
Because when they get the job they have 30 players stood looking at them and waiting to be told what to do.
A manager can make changes but to a large extent they have to work with a lot of what they inherited.
We're a bit spoilt in this country where we've always assumed players are signed because a manager has personally identified them and wants them, but it's not the way it works in a lot of other countries where a manager is given a Squad and told to manage them.
I guess we'll know in the next few months if this guy is any good and if Brian is willing to pick him.

Surely Brian would have asked questions regarding the owners influence on buying players when he was being interviewed for the job. If the Thais were honest with him he must be happy with the situation.

Like Clarke and Hurtado. He only saw a few minutes of him via video. The Thai's brought him in, as well as Sa, and probably the fancy loans as well. It's just ridiculous, especially when you look at the cost and what a manager could have done with that money. No wonder Clarke wanted to look elsewhere when interest was shown. I wouldn't want to be told I have a points target to achieve with players I haven't had a say in bringing to the club!

Maybe this is a move towards the European module where the guy running the team/ squad is a coach and not a manager as we have been used to here.
It is common abroad for players to be bought with not necessarily any input from the manager (Real Madrid being a classic case) and the coach has to just get on and get the best out of those players.
Reading the new Real Madrid?

But on the flip side, the owners have probably worked with the scouting team and DoF to identify Rakels. I very much doubt they've just loaded up FM16 and seen who's playing well.

And i'm sure that McD was given the chance to voice his opinion, after all why would the owners waste 500k on a player if the manager is never going to play him. So yeah, they may have found the player without Brain being asked but i'm sure he's happy to take him.
