Forbury Lion
Stranded Whilst I respect your opinion Woodcote, I personally would begrudge paying £15 to watch what would basically be a friendly against either an uninterested foreign club or a bunch of old ex-footballers and celebrities.
I guess a testimonial is the better option for you then as you can choose not to pay the £15 and stay at home instead.

How many Royalty points will you get for the ticket? And how many will you need to buy one?

Whats to say that Murty will still be with the club? Maybe Real Madrid or Accrington Stanley will come in for him.

If they have testimonial for recognition then great, if not then it would be obscene.

Dirk Gently So what else should he have done when injured?

The point being as i said earlier that it was common knowledge at the time within the club that he was in the treatment room even when his injuries had cleared up as far as the staff were concerned.

I don't necessarily blame him as i said, i wouldn't have fancied playing for us at the time either. It was bad enough watching

playoffs or layoffs He also said something along the lines of 'why shouldn't players use testimonials to be able to provide for their family' so he may not be thinking of donating the money raised to charity.

If I stick in my current job for another 6 years will I get a testimonial? Testimonials in football are an anachronism. You really are a soppy lot sometimes 8) .

Also, don't give me the loyalty nonsense! Do you think that if Inter Milan came in and offered to treble Murty's salary he'd think twice about staying?

None hopefully. Because it'll be a case of you going for someone's benefit, not for your own personal gain. As for Royalty Points to get in, that all depends on the amounts when it happens.

Of course, Murts has got to stay here until then ain't he.

The general feeling on Soccer Saturday is that no having a testimonial for Murts is, and I quote Paul Merson, "disgusting".

Personally, I'm all for it.

TUE 28 NOVEMBER
Reading chairman John Madejski has been speaking about a possible testimonial for club captain, Graeme Murty.

Last week rumours in the newspapers suggested Murty and Madejski had fallen out over testimonial plans - with the chairman opposing any testimonial - but Murty denied the reports.

Now the chairman's told us while the club's position is clear, they may not be totally inflexible.

"The policy of the football club is we don't do testimonials," said Mr Madejski, "but we've got a board meeting, and we'll discuss and review the situation then."

To the Board....DO THE RIGHT THING!

If you work for a decent employer then, yes, they would recognise your loyalty with some sort of gift and presentation. As I've mentioned before it's the recognition, rather than the money, which should be the issue here.

Of course not but we are talking in the normal scheme of things here, not the realms of fantasy.

As far as I'm aware Murty hasn't been the type of player who has been continuously badgering the club for a better deal and had his agent out trying to stir up interest amongst other clubs, in an attempt to secure a lucrative sequence of moves between clubs.

Instead he appears to have recognised that he has been getting a fair deal from RFC and has been more than happy to concentrate on giving his best to the team and club. I call that loyalty and believe it should be recognised.

They are just normal blokes who happen to be extremely priveledged to have a job most of us can only dream of. In my opinion 10 years at a football club is not a reason for a testimonial and I'm fully behind Madejski.

I still respect Murts and what he has done, but I don't feel the club need to organize anything for him and they certainly shouldn't be expected to.

As for Merson's comments...Well he's a washed up old drunk who spunked all his money in the bookies, so he would say footballers need a testimonial.

As Murty signed in July 1998 I assume he would not be eligible for a testmonial until the 2008/09 season. Why is this even being discussed now?

Probably just a quiet time for sports journalists and this hit the national news along with his negotiation of a new contract.

The problem with giving Murty a testimonial is if you give in to 1, then others will be demanding it when the time comes and without doubt, there a couple of Reading players who if they reach 10 years will feel they deserve it having contributed so much.

Shorey would be entitled 2010, Harper 2011 etc.

Also, any testimonial for Murty should be delayed until he retires, the idea of players having them despite 3 or 4 years playing years left never appeals to me.

WTF would this be a problem?

Is anyone being asked to sacrifice an arm, a leg or test an untried drug that might prove fatel :?

No one is even asking RFC to risk being out of pocket, just to give the fans a chance to show their appreciation of long standing servants of the club.

WTF anyone would want to place some kind of limit on such activities, given that loyalty is fast becoming a very rare beast within the game, really does beggar belief.

I place testimonials in the same league as tipping hairdressers, waiters and taxi drivers. It's about time footballers were paid a decent wage.
