JC
oldelmparky  I prefer to look at the magic numbers.

They are currently 17 & 35.

Of course we'll stay up, that 17 will soon evaporate, it's the 35 for a Europe place that will take a little longer to achieve.

It's currently 36 for a EUFA Cup place from 12 games - a bit of a tall order!

Yes 36... Hadn't noticed Everton have a game in hand.

But a tall order, I don't think so. It's a taller order for Everton, they still have to play, Man U and Chelsea. And it's even taller for Portsmouth they've got to play Reading, Man U and Chelsea.

Now 12 with 11 to play --for those still keeping score at home-- and set to drop by another point if Watford fail to beat Wigan away on the 21st.

Just wait'll you see it graphically!

Anybody who still thinks we're not safe should request an urgent assessment under the Mental Health Act.

I can see us finishing this season with 56 points so I would say that keeps us well in the safety zone... but you never know things like this have a nasty habbit of turning around and biting you in le derrier so we will just have to wait and see

slightly related, but it was exactly a year ago today that we effectively got promoted, with the 2-0 win over the best team in the championship giving us 82 points, one more than Watford eventually achieved.

actually that's barely related at all, but I've typed it now, so sod it.

Being slightly pedantic I think you will find it is 12 and 33.

Of almost as much interest is that since the premiership was reduced to 20 teams the average points of the team finishing 7th was 56.5 meaning 57 would be enough to finish 6th. Similarly the highest points of a team finishing 7th was 61. This gives us secondary 'sort of magic' numbers of 14 and 19 from 11 games, 5 home and 6 away

We're already safe. Neither West Ham or Charlton will win 8 of their last 11 - which they need too to catch us. That's assuming we lose the next 11.

BUMP

I make it 12 (and with a much superior GD so really 11) and 30 after tonights results; that home defeat was Everton's game in hand.

We could be as little as 2 wins away from mathematical survival.
