Who do you want to replace Clarke?

Ok, so maybe not the most exciting or ambitious manager to bring in. But on the other hand, Reading are trying to build an ethos and culture, beginning with new hopefully long-term owners, looking to install and reign over a solid foundation and grow us steadily and sensibly into a sustainably great team.

That in mind, many of the names touted as Clarke’s replacement (and even Clarke himself) would not really buy into that – they would see Reading as a short term stepping stone on to better things. Maybe we would benefit from that short-termism but it would be at best an up-down ride of boom and bust.

McDermott however; I can’t see him jumping ship as easily, if at all. He will buy into our plan completely and drive it forwards, becoming the heart of the new culture, rather than an outsider to it. A good manager for the long haul who is 100% Reading Vs a great manager for a short spell to whom Reading means very little?

Maybe Brian is actually a fantastic choice, the best even. I must admit I’m coming round to the idea.

Well said. The Thais value loyalty and Clarke showed an astounding lack of it by making the "professional" decision to see Fulham. I still just cannot get over the amazing crassness of his decision considering all the support he had been given by the owners to build a long term project at RFC.

Hopefully Brian can do what Clarke should have done and build the club for the long term.

The more I think about it, the more I like it.

Promotion is a bonus. Feeling a connection with the players and the manager is more important, and the last time it felt like everyone was pulling together was under Brian.

Indeed - if I am honest I thought Pearson would be good. But I take the point that he would most likely leave for a bigger team as soon as such a job became available. And in any case he will most likely get the Newcastle job if patient unless their turn round continues.

By all accounts getting Bri to leave his cushy job as chief scout at Arsenal to come back and work for a club where he wasn't treated brilliantly first time round wasn't necessarily an easy sell, so I'm not sure it's as 'cheap' an option as some will try to pronounce.

He's got less hair than Ancelotti, but if he can foster the same kind of spirit he did first time round, we could be in for a treat.

The Thais probably see his affiliation for the club and know that he will be a long-term option, and buy into their ethos.

My one concern is the tactical naivety he showed before, like going 4-4-2 at Chelsea when it was 2-2, and his tendency to go for a win when we needed to be a little more solid. But I think that came from his desire to win more than any kind of stupidity or carelessness, and he's much more qualified than me to make those kinds of calls anyway.

He'll be very popular with the fans, of course, and will steady the ship. He won't have the same kind of pressure as Clarke did, and that will allow the owners to make a few more tweaks and get the project going again.

Now it just needs to be confirmed so we can all get on with it.
