Royal Lady I might be wrong, but I think he was trying to make the point that we sold our best assets (irrespective of whether they wanted to go or not) and did nothing about replacing like for like. Or something.

Yes he was, but why he used the term "fire sale" only he knows. (Oh and sorry if you saw my comments as being rude, I certainly didn't intend them to be).

We were never going to replace like for like and nor would I expect us to. We have a big hole in our revenues and the only way to fill it is to sell players and replace them with cheaper ones. It is what a club looking for financial security does.

Royal Lady Maybe his use of the word "firesale" was wrong, but what I think he meant was that we'd sold our best assets

I think it was wrong - it's an emotive and overused term that implies that players went cheaply. Personally, I think the opposite's the case - I can't believe we got so much for the players.

Although.... I just found this on the internet:

In professional sports, a fire sale occurs when a team trades many of its veteran players to other teams for less expensive players, usually for financial reasons - veteran could mean, long standing as well as "old" I presume??

Commendable loyalty RL. Where did you find that? Wikipedia US or summat?

Royal Lady But what of our purchases to "replace" them?

I'm still finding it hard to grasp why we have 5 strikers now and only 3 last season when we were playing abysmally. Yet Coppell said we only needed 3 strikers - so why does he suddenly think we need 5?

I apologise to Wycombe Royal, but I've got to reply to this.

Coppell didn't exactly say that. He said he would be happy with 3 strikers, not need 3 strikers. He obviously wanted another striker, but would have been happy to settle for what he's got if he failed in buying a striker.

You're wrong Spacey - we HAD four strikers - but he sent Lita out on loan to Charlton - thus leaving with us with three, which he said was ample.

although we have 5 strikers there are some key issues to think about

1. lita is being ignored so he does not count at the moment
2. long has played awfully so far this season and imo should have been dropped by now
3. mooney is being typically eased into the club by only playing for the reserves and doing pretty well
4. Nhunt is similar to mooney except he is allowed to sit on the bench and come on with 10 mins to go

so we have only really got 2 strikers at the moment - doyle and long - who are being picked. and long is not taking his chance
Coppell seems reluctant to pick Nhunt and Mooney
Lita is currently out of favour with coppell and who knows how long it will be before he is called back to the first team?

Oh yes, I do. I have not seen anywhere that he said we needed five strikers. I seem to remember Coppell commenting on the purchase of Mooney that the opportunity arose that he could buy him at a good price due to Cork's financial difficulties, he didn't buy Mooney because we needed 5. I have not seen any comment from Coppell this season on how many strikers we need, just that he would be happy with the three he had before the arrival of Mooney and Noel Hunt.

HTH.
