^ although that was a brilliant game for the neutral, as a Reading fan it was horrendous and I can't bring myself to watch the goals - particularly Tottenham's 5th where blatant encroachment goes unpunished  . We were brilliant that day going forward but defensively shambolic, leading 3 times and losing was heart-breaking and set us up for a truly awful 2nd half of our relegation season in the Prem. Pompey 7-4 was a warning sign, as was Blackburn 4-2.....Coppell utterly failed to act in the transfer market and we were left with Sonko who was a shadow of his former self and a truly inadequate Duberry/Ivar partnership. The Tottenham game was a key turning point in things turning sour for us. Horrible day.

Relegation happens due to a culmination of many things but I agree that this game was the most significant individual factor.

The 7-4 you could put down as a freak result that happens occasionally and the way we set ourselves up,with the odd exception, was to "have a go" even away from home. However after the Spurs result the players simply froze and all the belief in going forward and attacking disappeared. It's widely held that Shorey's form dipped because his head was turned but I actually think it was a as much to do with those 2 heavy defeats as anything else. Even without Little/Convey we could always rely on the full backs to offer width going forward but from the Spurs game onwards they barely crossed the halfway line.

Our defensive record actually wasn't too bad for the last dozen games or so but it came at the expense of us as an attacking force.

Tranmere 1-3 Reading Play off semi final 1994/95 - Probably the most complete and dominat performance that I had seen from a Reading team. And to consider that they had beaten us twice in the league that season.

Of recent times, and discounting the Premier seasons for obvious reasons, the FA Cup quarter final v Villa. We were absolutely breathtaking in the first half and I have never heard the Mad Stad so loud.

Brighton away in 93/94 was a bit special. Gilkesy won 5 headers, Adie sold the most outrageous dummy ever and Scott Taylor scored with a sublime chip.

And I still think that some of the football played under McGhee in 93/4 and 94/5 was the best that I have seen. That is not to detract from the class of 2005/06 or 2006/07 but the football was so pleasing on the eye.

Great analysis you guys. I got up to 4-3 and couldn't watch any more just now. God were we exciting going forward that day. Relegation was devastating. Can we not stay down again?

Archie's penalty Can you stomach it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0rZx6Fvz-A

Still convinced that if Sonko wasn't so p*ss poor in that game we would have won.

cmonurz Reading 4-3 Oxford, Tony Rougier scoring a winning brace in the pissing rain, and from that day to this, as a result of that performance, I remain convinced Rougier is a footballing god.

And it will already have been mentioned but I can't be arsed trawling the thread - never have I felt better at a football match than the last 10 minutes of the play-off semi final with Wigan. It's what boyhood footballing dreams are made of, your team down and out, facing elimination, summoning up hitherto untold amounts of skill, passion and old fashioned guts to pull a remarkable win out of nowhere.

That will be my lasting memory of Rougier so he'll always be a Reading legend for me as a result, Was that game the one where Whitehead kept the ball in play and slid off the pitch himself to leave an open goal as well?

Has anyone mentioned Reading 3-2 Crystal Palace..

Best game I have seen in my life I still stand by it, it had everything. The double penalty miss, Lita's overhead kick, a late winner, lovely stuff.

Charlton 1 Reading 2

The day Simon Osborne scored that cracking volley from a corner. The away end was packed and boozed up and I remember it being just a top, top day all round.

Tranmere away in the play offs a close second. Recently, it has to be Forest away last year. Once again a totally cracking day out :D

Reading 3-3 Bournemouth May 2001

Great game remembered for Helicopters :o , Defoe and Caskey coming of the bench and putting a free kick in the top corner with his first touch.

URZZZZZZZZ Forest 3-4 Reading last season. Absolutely incredible game and a glorious day to boot!

^^ this

Great game especially enjoyed Jimmy's reaction to scoring - looked like it really meant something to him

Left the game thinking we were really on a roll and were serious contenders

Agreed.

Fantastic atmosphere and we gave a good account of ourselves. John Carew was world class that day
