Extended-Phenotype Assists do not form part of the official rules of football.
That makes me incredibly sad.
Extended-Phenotype The criteria can vary depending on whomever is keeping the data.
WHOMever? Pass.
Most commonly though, a player is awarded an assist if he wins a scored penalty, unless
he himself scores it. Universally, players can’t assist themselves in any circumstance.
I don't care. I award a Major Contribution for merely WINNING a penalty, and anybody
who cannot understand that the winning of a penalty is TOTALLY separate from whether
it is scored, just needs to go lie down and try actual THINKING.
PS The site I have quote DOES give Roberts an assist for the penalty HE took (and missed/scored)
The consensus seems to be that Roberts would have an assist if the penalty was taken and scored by someone else.
Majority opinion is the opinion of the masses. Not interested.
If that someone missed the pen, but then scored the rebound in open play, there would be no assist.
Shame about that web-site (and my stats, cos I DO award the "assist" or Major Contribution to be precise.
In which case, it seems even more daft to suggest an assist when that player is the same person.
Why do so many round here play straw man all the time.
I award a MC for winning a penalty.
(a) For winning a penalty.
(b) Whover takes the penalty
(c) Whether the penalty is scored or not.
What I am interested in is some measure of what the attackers DO, and winning pens,
forcing saves, hitting the woodwork, getting actual assists, being involved in a 3-man
move etc, all these matter, and, in toto, give a measure of the player
A penalty was won, but not scored, by the same person. I can’t really see where the assist is in that scenario.
See above. and that website
