More to the point, it was too good for Gylfi to turn down. There are plenty of players who looked like they were going to be the next big thing and didn't break-through, for one reason or another. When your career is so short, you have to grab opportunities with both hands, even if it is an emotional wrench.

And if you have the determination to have got this far as a professional footballer it's almost certain that you have the confidence in your own abilities to believe that you'll be successful wherever and whenever you move. So why wait?

Plus, of course, the standard of coaching in Germany, and the opportunities for a youngster, are a lot better than they probably would be in a mid-ranking English PL team. It's not as if Gylfi grew up in Whitley and is a life-long reading supporters, after all - he comes from Iceland, FFS! He'd not have the same emotional ties to us that a local lad would have.

So why on earth would he turn this move down?

As there is with all players, there was a figure agreed as a valuation, and any offer received which is over that figure will be put to the player. An offer over that figure was received, and the player accepted it. As simple as that.

prostak Lolzat putting FACT in capitals to show one is REALLY SERIOUS in one's namedropping arrogance tbqpfgh.

I know for a fact that Gylfi was well liked at RFC, right up to the Chairman, (major name drop) his head was never turned about how he was getting attention, and just played and acted as he always had. Model professional, perhaps it is to do with being Icelandic, and acting like a professional, much like Gunnar and Ivar seem to have been.

Just could be a reason they both got new contracts when others did not.

Play at a reasonable contract cost in the Championship, or drop a level and earn the same, so both still have the chance to play at a higher level.

Stranded His sale has paid for the team to fly to Boro too apparently.

This is the kind of thing that pisses me most about the club and its apparent lack of finance.

They struggle to even fly the team up north??? surely we can't be that bad off to the point we needed to sell our best player to fund a 1 way flight up north?

How can we possibly expect to have a chance for promotion when the side are not given best possible chance to prepare for games like this by reducing travelling time.

Now cost it...

Hire of luxury coach to go to airport, check in two hours early, business class flight tickets (25 of them), collect bags from airport, luxury coach to hotel and to ground. Followed by the same again to come home less airfare assuming return tickets.

Spot on. When I saw the post moaning about not being able to afford the flight, I thought "Christ on a Cross!!!"

Would the 25 include the chairman, Howe, Hammond and the coaching staff?

Not forgetting that we'd have to bring a load of kit (which is shirts, shorts, socks, shinpads, boots and spares) presumably we'd have to pay for the storage. Also the fecking insurance!!!

 That was shockingly bad. If that's top of the league stuff in Germany, no wonder it's so cheap.

I'm pretty sure more people care about how the best player ever to emerge from our academy is doing rather than how many chicken nuggets Shane Long has for dinner before another crap performance.

For the hard-of-thinking there's already a "SigWatch" thread on GF for following what our ex-player is doing, so there's really no need to carry it on here.
