Firstly hello, I'm a Newcastle and Reading supporter (wtf?). But I'm local (I walk to the Mad Stad for games) and have had a season ticket since Reading were in the old Division 2. So I guess I'm some despicable hybrid plastic fan (score draw in both games this season and I'll still be able to keep on fence-sitting ;)).

I was quite disappointed to see Guthrie leave - he was getting games during the ACN when Tiote was away and Cabaye had picked up a stupid ban and looked very handy indeed. It was ultimately unfair on the guy when Pards dropped him the moment those two were available. However it's common knowledge he was going to leave on a free, and so I've said all along that he'd be an ideal signing for Reading. Desperate need for midfielders with genuine experience at this level, which Guthrie has imo.

He's a great passer of the ball, which imo Reading have lacked ever since Siggurdsson left. He'll get a fair few games in the middle but I'm not totally sure whether he'll ever be fit enough to play an entire season. Might chip in with a goal or two as well. I think he'll be good to have in support of Pog & Roberts, who need decent balls put in to them because they're not the most mobile of players...

He was given an improved contract offer and turned it down for games. He's EXACTLY the sort of player Reading should be signing if the club is to progress. I reckon he's found his true level if he can slot into the side. Not sure Mr Mad would be too chuffed if he starts hoying lobster thermidor around Cilantro though...

Good use of hoying.

And 'greed - a geordie m8 of mine said almost exactly the same thing about Guthrie.

Our central midfield is somewhat lacking imho and this is a super signing.

Even before the Championship, I've been in the North Stand ever since they built the Mad Stad. So Reading were in the Second Division.

Username? Well we all have to have one. I've used this one since i was 12 because i was a fan of Pokemon and Marilyn Manson at the time and have yet to think of another one that stuck.

pea
LightwaterRoyal I remember seeing him play for Newcastle in the championship, he took a few set peices and I thought they were awful, he seemed to give the ball away alot aswell but I wont judge him from one game. In McDermott we trust.

Just hope Harte doesnt lose his place because there arent many better set peice takers than him in the counrty.

If its the game I'm thinking of I thought we made them look pretty average as a team. But he was top of their assists in a team that walked the league that year

From stats for the 09/10 season:

#11 overall in league
#4 (tied) for assists in league (Gylfi was tied for 10th  )
#2 in assists for Newcastle (Wayne Routledge had 15, danny had 12)

Guthrie was certainly one of the more introvert players to have appeared for Newcastle.

If anything he was too quiet - and this perhaps cost him first team chances on occasion during his stay.

Yet he always came across as a decent lad.

After away games he would go and meet his parents to have a quick chat next to the team bus, but then still find time to sign hundreds of autographs for the fans waiting in the cold to greet Toon players.

Guthrie was always the type of player that was prepared to come out with an explanation for the fans after defeats - something you can never take for granted while covering Newcastle United!

Credit to him for sticking with the club after relegation, he could have quit and did get offers to go elsewhere

doesnt really sound like a "bad boy" to me

gr8 signing on a free

top stuff

And I'm sure if he was a bit of a pcunt Pardew would have let McDermott know about it. The Sky interview with him is good as well.

I think we can fairly safely say that he's been promised a lot of games based on what he's been saying in the media. So who looses a place? Ledge, Jem or a Striker?

If it wasn't for Roberts, I'd say our signings and the demand of the prem have us lining up in a 4-5-1. Strong Mr. Pog up top, Guthrie as an AM with Jem and Legs behind him.

However, the rumour of Rhodes (i.e. how many attackers do we need if we are setting up for just 1 up top), and Roberts quality (and vocal opposition to lone striking) maybe we are going to take a risk and swap Jem for Guthrie in our starting line-up.

No idea what I'd prefer to happen. Roberts deserves a chance, but we desperately need some creativity in the middle. Can Reading and Guthrie cope with just two in central midfield?

Guthrie's a player who needs someone like Legs alongside him to do the dirty work and win the ball. He was a bit crap whenever he was played alongside Cabaye or to sit deeper as it severely restricted his game - he's not much defensively and is at his best when allowed to spray passes around. He was ridiculously good in the Championship as he had ample time on the ball to do just that.

Not sure Guthrie - Karacan would work away from home as the midfield would be too lightweight. Maybe at home where the team can go out and attack more then it'd be great to have two CMs who can actually pass the ball.

Not sure about England ambitions but he's miles better than Jordan Henderson! To be honest though I'd wager half of this board are better than Henderson though...

I don't think Roberts will be expecting to play every minute of every game tbh

Not sure Karacan will be playing enough during preseason to earn a starting place for the first match so I expect it to be Guthrie - Ledge in CM to begin with, although I can see us having Jem and Guthrie there permanently by the end of the season
