It makes no sense to let him go to save a relatively small salary cost unless we need to free up an over 21 place in our 23 man squad, as he was born in England I believe he counts as home grown so I don't buy that.

Might just be the manager trying to be fair to Tab instead of selfish and keeping him as an insurance policy should there be injuries.

andrew1957 Tabb has always given his all for RFC, but I can sort of understand this decision on a long term basis as we need to improve quality if now (or in the future) we are serious about being a fixture in this division.

I certainly hope he gets a good club. I thought he sounded gutted in the interview - although he was being fantastically positive which is what is so great about this player. He deserves to get a good contract somewhere.

Don't buy that's how it works. McDermott says who he wants to keep and Hammond tries to tie them down at a reasonable price. I don't see contract terms being an issue with Tabb somehow.

We've brought in midfielders and something has to give. It's clear Tabb's been back up choice to play for most of his time at Reading and isn't in McDermott's long-term first team plans.

I don't really like the decision, but it's hard to argue with the logic.

works hard but hopefully Brian has realised that you need quality now.

I can see ledge going very soon and Brian slowly building a team that plays 4-5-1.

In what way has Tabb showed a lack of quality? He's been excellent, and could out-leap Steve Austin.

I think this is the best decision for both the club and the player and may well have been driven by Tabb himself after having a fair run of 1st team games and putting in some MOTM performances.

He's easily good enough for a top half Championship side at least and the only reason he didn't get more games over the last couple of seasons was because there were only 2 midfield positions available and he wasn't going to get in ahead of Legs or Karacan

I was really hoping that he would get a goal for us though, especially this season. There were a few times when he was the midfielder who was bursting into the box so with a bit more luck and a bit less man handling (Citeh and Sunlun) he may well have

Good luck to him, been a fantastic player for us. Can't remember him ever having a bad game and if it wasn't for Brian Howard he'd have been a first team regular for 4 seasons now.

Gutted that he never managed to score for us.

The same Brian Howard that's just been released by league 1 Pompey....

There's a real touch of sadness to the interview on the OS. I sincerely hope he'll go on to be the big man (figuratively) at another club rather than subsiding to obscurity at an early age.

Exactly. How he was in the team ahead of Tabb during the late Coppell/Rogers days I don't know. Obviously Tabb > Howard. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Sadly not.

Howard was signed by Rodgers at the end of his first (and only window) so wasn't even at the club up the Coppell era. Tabb may have had a few weeks on the sidelines but then played constantly WITH Howard at the end of 09/10 in a good looking midfield 3 with Sigurdsson. When Sigurdsson got sold it was Leigertwood and Karacan's partnership that really spelled the end of any consistent playing time for him.

Would much rather keep Tabb and let Leigertwood go in January. Maybe not as much talent but will work X1000 times harder + would imagine he's on lower wages. Would be a shame to see Tabby go.

You know what you're going to get with Tabb, a solid 6 or 7 out of 10, nothing spectacular but hard working, consistant and never moans, just gets on with the job at hand. Not enough for a Premiership player but he will will make just about every squad in the Championship stronger with his presence.

Good player for us. A bargain for anyone who gets him.

Brian is clearly just doing right by tabby as he says because lets be fair hes unlikely to be our first choice midfielder.

Only 28 as well, so plenty of time in him yet, would love to see him start regulary in a team that gets promoted to the Prem. Always liked the guy, just a shame he could not make it here.

Just shows how quickly things can change in football.

There is a gulf in class between the Prem and the Championship and McDermott has to address that gulf.

Very quickly a player who has played most of the games for us this season can suddenly become out of favour. Tabb is a great lad and McDermott is a great manager. Nothing lasts forever, the club has to progress, Tabb needs to enjoy his football playing at the right level and at a club that suits him. Millwall would be perfect or any other similar club like Bristol City or Ipswich or whatever. He was Coventrys player of the season as well and was a great player for Cov so he certainly is good at his level. Without Tabb Cov went down and struggled. So Tabby is definitely a good player at the Championship level.

Jay Tabb is a better player than many give him credit for, especially those who say he can't pass :| and I agree he has, surprisingly, been superior to Legs for most of this season.

However, given our recent signings it is obvious he will be surplus to requirements next season regardless of the level we find ourselves and, as such, will not be offered a new contract.

Many thanks to a model pro and all the best for the future.

PS. Anyone who is prepared to risk a season's Premiership revenue by selecting a player who is worth next to nothing in top flight terms (not to mention being shortly out of contract and therefore worth even less) just to enhance what little value he possess, should be certified :P
