Kevin Doyle

Many on here seem to be saying that if Sunderland come in for KD we should let him go as he had such a poor season and only scored 6 goals.

BUT 6 goals in the PL is not that bad and some of you forget the huge amount of work he gets through every game. Doyle was one of the major reasons were promoted to the PL in the first place and if he leaves I fear it will be a repeat of Sidwell when many (including wrongly me) thought we could cope without him. We really need Doyle next year if we are to have a realistic chance of promotion.

Just to make the point many other strikers people have been calling on us to consider buying did either worse or only a little better last season

Bent - Wigan scored 7 and Heskey just 4
Sanli - Boro 8
Martins Newcastle 9 ands Viduka 7
Jones Sunderland 7 and Chopra 6
Dempsey - Fulham 6 and Healy 4
Douff - Bolton 4 and Nolan 5
Forsell - Brum 9 and Jerome 7

Just goes to show that PL goals are hard to come by.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment most of those players you named are either midfielders or were injured for a significant part of the season. However, I for one would really hate to see Kevin Doyle go because, given his experience in the Premier League, I now believe that all our forward line can score goals for fun next year. Playing against better defenders improves your game, so to drop a division with the quality of strikers we have can only be a good thing in terms of goalscoring. Let's not forget that Doyle has scored 37 times in the league over 3 seasons, 2 of which were in the Premier League.

We can not afford to let any of our strikers go. To replace them with anyone adequate on the budget likely to be available would be well nigh impossible.

Championship or not, we have to strengthen, not weaken our squad. Currently, thanks to injuries/departures/attitudes it is probably weaker than that which blitzed the Championship last time around.

Interesting stats Andrew and you make a fair point but I expect either Doyle or Lita will leave. To lose both would be a serious problem unless Coppell replaced one of them with a proven striker

You may well be right. I hope Lita stays as well but he does not add the all round play that Doyle offers. He is more of the goal poacher type and the way Reading play lends itself more to Doyle's style than to Lita's, so if one of them has to go then I would prefer it to be Lita.

Having said that I think all four of our strikers should be capable of 15 goals plus in the Championship if fit and selected regularly, but keeping all 4 happy may be a challenge.

I read the first few posts of this thread and started pissing myself. Someone who has scored 1 goal all season with his feet is not a £10m player. players like Akinbiyi have done more.

I am not sure if Doyle is the real deal (but Kitson is!) Neither of them have had a quality service from the wings or the midfield.

Please sell Harper for being an ineffectual energy bunny and keep Hunt for actually doing something. Shorey goodbye and thanks!

If a premiership club wanted him for a few million we should take it. Shorey's piss-poor displays this season show there is not much point keeping players against their will.

Personally, I'd take anything in the region of £3 million. I think he was our worst player in many games this year.

Don't see why Sunderland would want him though....They have Kenwyne Jones, Good player but not always reliable..
