Are you judging? Insinuating that this is poor? You cant do that!!

no

we did better second half, had a few decent chances, could as easily got a goal there, or lost about 5-0

but like they said, against 75 times argie champions river plate im happy with a 0-1
hopefully we can push on now and improve against 7 times french champs lyon

Saw 2nd half, OK performance. Clearly lacking match fitness as 1st game.

Robson-Kanu showed a couple of decent touches but overall looked a bit out of his depth. Didn't really have time to judge Cisse and Henry.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why this thread contains pictures of a German ship?

Was HMS Coventry German built ? No wonder they lost the war if they sold us the good ones and kept the rubbish for themselves.

It's the end of the Battle of the River Plate. The Graff Spee was scuttled by her captain at the mouth of the river in preference to surrendering to the British.

My view of the game:

River were deserving off the win and should of been more comfortable,

Players who stood out were Bikey, Federici, Kitson (2nd Half), Shorey did ok, and thought Duberry did well when he came on

Robson-Kanu, was his first game, but him along with Halls looked very poor.

No matter the opposition we need some creativity in the middle of the park, not at any point in the game did we play a penetrative pass through the midfield, everything comes down the flank

It did, for the most part, last season.

Interesting game.
If you didn't know you would wonder if Halls had ever played full-back.
We rode our luck in the first half and eventually came into the game in the last half hour.
Difficult debut for Kanu and although a bit lightweight he showed a bit of pace and verve.
Henry was only on for a few minutes.
Cisse was on for 20 minutes and although he looks like Viera his first touch looked a bit cumbersome.
Very difficult to judge Cisse, maybe we will see a bit more on Monday.

All in all a good workout and most of the players lasted the game well however we were very negative in the first half and created very little in the whole game but presumably the idea of this tour so far away is to get some more money and a bonding exercise rather than a genuine attempt (do we ever try to win cups? :D ).to win the competition.
Good to see us in action though after what seems an age since Blackburn.

I only watched the 2nd half so allegedly missed most of the bad stuff but if you can learn anything form the firs tgame of preseason I guess we learnt that

A-Fed is a very good keeper, even though he appears to be on the Marcus diet.

the ostentatiously named Robson-Kanu showed some good touches, one run into the box where only Kitto's return was lacking was very good, but he needs experience

Cisse made one quite nice run

Bikey looked very good, strong, pacey, he's developin in the exact same way Sonks did

Not a lot else really, although I'm slightly concerned as a TV watcher that this is the commentary standard that Setanta are lloking to set, I'd have thought paul Parker would be one of the last people to think they all look the same

Final thought, even if people disagree with the above and think we were absolute gash, don't worry about it, it's the first game of preseason

Saw 2nd half and last 10 of the first.

River totally controlled the game, should have won easily.

2nd half Reading were better but still the gulf in techincal ability and keeping the ball was evident.

Thought Federici should have doen better with the free kick, was a good strike but not in the corner, he seemed late getting towards it. Made very good double save in the 2nd half.

Halls - passing was poor, can see he likes to get forward but doesn't have the pace to get back. Average

Shorey -typical shorey

Bikey - Reading's best player, going to be a star i think. Pace, power, he's getting better, at 21 great future.

Ingimarsson - wasn't on for much of what i saw but did ok

Oster - looked lively, tried hard but second best to their winger

Harper - Reading's 2nd best player for me

Gunnarsson - rubbish until he went to right back.

Kanu - did ok for a first start, lots to learn and improve on but young and first game, did ok.

Kitson - good without ever threatening. It seems they have told Kitson to play deeper and try and create things, ok he is a god enough player to do that but i'd rather have the out and out goalpoacher from 2 years ago thanks.

Doyle - typical Doyle, never stopped trying, should have scored in the first half.

Doobs- again did fine, nothing bad nothing spectacular.

Henry - didn't get long enough.

Hunt - put 1 very decent corner in, we should have got one there.

Cisse - solid again if unspecatular.

in that sort of heat, against that sort of oppo you can't afford to give the ball away as easy as Reading did, that's the main lesson. Still it's far more valuable than beating the cast of Abba in Sweden as we have for the last 2 years.
