Given that Rodgers has said that failing to sign Smith made money available for other signings, that could mean that at best Rasiak and Smith were plan B and at worse were panic buys after Pompey promptly put their money where their mouth was and didn't try to jerk Watford around in the hope of getting the player cheap.

That Friday FeelingRoyalBlue Just on a point of semantics, the statement made by the club would still be true if discussions on signing Rasiak and McAnuff only began after Pompey threw their hat into the ring, as the Smith deal was only 'gazumped' once signatures were on paper.

I got the impression that these deals have been discussed before/during the Tommy Smith debacle and that they would have been added alongside Smith.
Rodgers' comment about the Smith cash relates to the "two or three" additional signings that we might now make, doesn't it?

Mr Angry re: SHunt being asked to stay another season etc. There is something here that doesn't make sense.
Why on Earth did they give him a new (and presumably) improved contract in Feb? Unless it was on the same money but lowering (or removing) the £5M bid clause?
RL is spot on with regard to how he played after Jan - now we know that he had been told he could go this Summer, it puts his performances (or lack of) in sharp contrast with Doyle's. Pretty disgraceful to be honest.

I'm guessing, but it may be that the Feb contract changes were more to do with bonuses for wins and promotion than basic salary.
Agree completely about the contrast between Shunt & Doyle. Although KD may have felt the same, he kept it to himself. It may be significant that he's one of the few footballers without an agent - he has solititors etc for drawing up contracts etc, but not an agent as such who's income if derived from his own.

I'm sorry but I can't help thinking that all this cloak and dagger, 'no press' nonsense is just a PR charade intended to make the attendees feel important in the belief that they are hearing privileged information.
Anyone who knows anything about normal human nature knows that if you want to keep something secret, there is no way that you can announce it to 100+ people in confidence!! It doesn't matter how much you urge those hearing the information to keep it confidential. In fact the more you stress the importantance of confidentiality, the greater the temptation/urge of a majority of recipients to let a few of their nearest and dearest in on the information - 'I've heard something really interesting, I'm not meant to tell anyone so if I tell you, you mustn't tell anyone'. Who on this board has never had anyone say these or very similar words to them?!
So of 100 people attending at least 50 tell at least one other person, at least 25 of them tell at least one other person etc. and so word starts to pass around. And before anyone bothers to do the maths and claim word of mouth doesn't spread very far, in reality I suspect far more than 50% pass on the secret and in most cases to two or more people. The juicier the secret the higher the dissemination rate.

Ian RoyalArnie_PieDeadlock Discussions on signing Rasiak and McAnuff were ongoing before the Smith deal was gazumped.
Good news. Should hopefully quieten the 'panic buy' brigade.
You don't expect anyone who has decided they are panic buys to listen to and believe what the club has said do you? Why do that when they can just make up their own mind based on their prejudice regardless of any evidence.

You're right in some ways, but at least it does slow down the rate of dissemination, and what is confidential today may be less relative and less sensitive in a few days (on Tuesday, for instance.)

That Friday Feeling There wasn't much of note anyway - in that respect it was a little disappointing.
We were told one player who is definitely in the team tomorrow. Another comment I took as a hint about another starter.
There were comments about the abilities/strengths of one or two players which I'm sure the club wouldn't want to get out in case they were twisted by the press to mean something they didn't intend.
We were given a sneak preview of the positions where we're still looking to strengthen. I say sneak preview because Brendan's blabbed anyway http://www.readingfc.co.uk/page/NewsDet ... 50,00.html
