The wall was too far right (from this view) - the ball went where Gunter is stood, which isn't part of the wall. So really McC should have been more to his left as well as the wall. Then it would have been saved, and if it went in the other corner then fair play to Barton for getting it up and over the wall from that close

Cheers TBM. With the amount of swerve they can get on the modern balls I think walls are generally pushed further outside of the near post than they ever used to be. I think this was the same with the free kick in the Donny game.

Interesting that someone pointed out that Guthrie was again involved in lining up the wall as well. I can't remember any keeper having an outfield player help like that in the past, and seems odd to me.

McCarthy should have lined the wall up to cover the right hand side of the goal and positioned himself on the left side giving Barton the opportunity to go over the wall from 19 yards out.

If Barton could get it up and down in time you say well done!!

Terminal Boardom Wasn't the free kick that led to the equaliser fairly central? Probably the worst place to defend as the keeper will line up the wall to defend one side and he looks after the other. Anyone remember this from a few years back (2.45 onwards) http://youtu.be/9Vyz1NqssIE

That said, it was hit with plenty of accuracy and pace.

My first England away game - quite a baptism of fire!

Seaman was too far to the side. Position should be halfway between there & where McCarthy was. (Easy from the stands, isn't it?)

The video doesn't show that we charged down their initial free kick in the same way the Dutch did to ours, but this time the ref ordered a retake.

Twenty years on, I'm still bitter!

In a situation like Saturday, when it's clear the player is going to shoot - why not stick a defender on the post?

Because then the attacking team will simply put a player right in front of the goal keeper, as that defender will be playing him on-side.

And if it were Gunter he would just duck out of the way.

1:00 to 1:05.

How Gunter is getting any slack on this I don't know.

Yeah, this is a peculiar one tbh, people trying to pin it on McCarthy :| . Wall arranged, Gunter clearly moves out of the way of the travelling ball and therefore - once again - fails to do his job properly.

What is most surprising about this to me is that Gorkss is escaping without any criticism.
It was his reckless, unnecessary and badly timed challenge which led to this goal

:|

Guthrie is expecting the ball to his right, and is trying to stop A-E moving him to the left.

Tbh he couldn't get much worse than the first 5 minutes. I'd never seen a player get nutmegged by a speculative cross before, but Gorkss managed it in the third minute. Even better, just two minutes later, he again managed to scissor a QPR cross through his own legs.

In that situation, could the wall be a hindrance? Maybe not from that close as it would essentially be a further away penalty, but from 25 yards out I think keepers over think walls and it would be better just to get a clear sight of the ball. Adkins out.

:| Gunter wasn't part of the wall......McCarthy arranged his wall and then stood behind it, for a free kick that was on the edge of the box - therefore almost impossible to get it up, over and down where the wall is stood.

Gunter still moves out of the way of the ball as it travelled directly into the corner of the net. It doesn't matter if he's part of the wall or not, if he stood his ground the ball wouldn't have got past him.

I don't reckon it would have hit Gunter even if he didn't turn away

If anything it would have hit his hand
