Sun Tzu Federici's slide out of the area wasn;t an error of judgement, he had to go for the ball but how he was supposed to stop the slide I have no idea.

He could have kicked it away!

You'd give George Best, Steve Archibald, Jim Leighton, Matthew Upson and a few others a chance of getting in the side - although I'd agree that would be stretching the envelope a little !

The fact remains that the current Liverpool side does not ooze class and is not filled with quality players. If it was they wouldn;t be struggling so badly (in their terms) with their manager under constant pressure. The main thing Benitiez is accused of is that he signs a lot of sub standard players !

If it is accepted that the Liverpool side is full of quality players I fear the word 'quality' has lost it's meaning.

Karacan had a great game. Siggy and Jobi also very good.

Now we have to continue playing like this against Newcastle next game.

Sun Tzu Surely it's what most commentators say about them ? Although to be fair Reina is a very good keeper so two should be three.

Remove Torres and Gerrard and they are very average and way below the standards [i]expected of Liverpool.[ib]

the bolded part is the key point - "average" by a champions league club's standards, rather than just "average".

There's probably not a player in Reading's history who would get in that team on ability.

Kerry Dixon? Robin Friday? Neil Webb? Nicky Shorey? Insua was godawful afterall. Hard to judge N'Gog on one showing but possibly Doyle?

Dixon, no chance.

Friday? Talented, but totally untested at anywhere near that level.

Shorey? The same Shorey who has had to drop back to the championship to get a game?

Webb is the best call, but the fact is that "average" by Liverpool's standards would be a candidate for best player ever by ours.

yes Pablo and MaccyD should pick (injuries aside) the same team...........but, of course you wouldn't think so, reading some of the posts on here

Indeed. He could have dived head first and headed it as well ! You don;t see many keepers booting the ball away inside their area when it wasn't a back pass. The ref decided he'd handled it so it ended up as an error but how he could have made a judgement on how far he might slide I'm not sure - did Bibbo do any sliding drills pre match ? !!

I'm glad to see we have all joined the Karacan of love. Always been my favourite of the young uns but happy to see teh Sig and Church do so well as well.

Watched in a pub in Vienna - Liverpool were unbelievably poor but it was great to see the effort we put in, the happiness on Mcdermott's face when we scored and the full stadium.

Great start to the New Year - now let's keep it up 8)

A lot of people getting carried away on a performance where all we really did was contain, to a degree, a very poor Liverpool side

Apart from a good performance from little Jem I didnt see anything to get too excited about

Get a point at home on Saturday and look like we are actually capable of winning the game and I will be a lot more enthusiastic

I saw a lot to get excited about.I saw players throwing themselves at the ball and hustling a "poor Liverpool team" into panic mode.

Pick the same team next game Brian (perleeze don't do a Brendan), and kick it into their selected butts that this is what we do every game from now on.

BenReadingFC What was your post match prediction, mine was that we were gonna get raped after the pitiful performance at Plymouth. I heard all the apologies from players etc after the game and hoped for a better display but this outdid what I expected on the night. Made me proud to be a Reading supporter again. Another great game under the floodlights with plenty of action in the Y26 stands as well due to some plastic Scouse making himself known + wearing a shirt. I did lol when the Stewards grabbed him and somebody came down the stairs and twatted him in the head. Saw quite a few flying coins being thrown at him from above as he was man handled down the stairs. Great Performance by a Reading team that looked shockingly poor earlier in the week, Where was this TEAM of players at Plymouth with such urgency. Dont just shine for the TV and plastics, do it for the hardcore.

For f*cks sake, can't you ever acknowledge anything good in any club apart from RFC?

They may not have performed to their price tags/standards yesterday but to deny that they are a club full of quality players is absolutely absurd!

Surely it's what most commentators say about them ? Although to be fair Reina is a very good keeper so two should be three.

Remove Torres and Gerrard and they are very average and way below the standards expected of Liverpool. All over the pitch they are lacking in quality which is why they are out of the Champions League and in trouble in the league.

I know you hate RFC and take every opportunity to see us in a negative light but it seems pointless to suggest Liverpool at the moment are full of class players. This season gives endless instances to prove that compared to the genuinely class sides Liverpool are lacking.

In terms of a club however (very different to a team) I have a great deal of respect for them and the trips to Anfield with Reading were superb experiences.

I know others wisely advise me to ignore you, since you talk down to everyone but you really are a pratt of the first order! You 'know I hate RFC' - you know nothing of the sort. Just because I have absolutely no time and liking for Madejski and some of those that work for him does not mean that I hate the football team but even that massive distinction is probably too subtle for your mind. You only haveto read the comments that I have made praising the team's performance yesterday and saying how nice it was to be able to be proud of them to know that you are talking complete and utter shyte when you claim I hate RFC, just as you are talking shyte when you knock the quality of Liverpool's squad.

Saw the game also on TV here in Japan (Live coverage started 2:10AM!), and I was pretty impressed how Reading plays against five times European champion.
It was rare opportunity for non-UK resident to see Reading players joined last Summer in the game, and to be honest, I thought we play much better than I can imagined from comments in Hob Nob last 5 months.
Well, I can now stop worry about religation matter, as long as Royals are capable of showing that level of performance.
I still much prefer team of 2005-06 season and it was joy to watch Royals against WBA in FA cup that year. Pure magic football for me.
Now I feel like saying; Happy New Year to all!

What a load of bollocks! Would you rather Reading get relegated and lose all it stars ( Siggy, Karacan and McAnuff ) than watching them play great football? I would rather survive this horror season than to play nice football TBH.

Love a laugh in the morning RB !!

Isn't there an 8 page thread on General Football bemoaning the paucity of talent at Anfield at the moment ? Don't the Liverpool fans rail against the worrying drop in standards at the club ? Even the genuine great players they have were way off form against us, hard to come up with a single class moment from them (Kuyt's run to create their goal perhaps ?)

Too much park football for you if you really think Lucas, Ngog, Insua, Kelly, Aquialani et al 'ooze class'. You seem to be alone in the footballing world to rate this massively disappointing Liverpool side. Benetez for Manager of the Year in your eyes ?

Er, I think he means that if we play like we did against Liverpool for the remaining league games we won't have to worry about being relegated. Seems fair enough to me.

My take on the game is quite simple; until we get a proper right back, we will always be vulnerable at the back, whilst I genuinely see no place for Marek in our midfield. BMcD clearly favours a straight 442, and in that formation, Marek is a luxury the team can't afford. We have to ensure we battle in midfield in order to protect our defence so that means starting with Karacan & Cisse next game; Howard clearly not match fit when he came on and was invisible.

A big LOL to all those calling for Hamer to be brought in after the Plymouth game; he had a mare.
