Harpers So Solid Crew I thought that the club ditched Sweet Caroline quite quickly.

Could really have become a RFC anthem.

I wholeheartedly concur with that sentiment. Maybe we could bring it back for them. Over to you East Stand to kick it off.

TBF the trouble is that it is not really a during game song, as rather long, like Delilah needs to be sung at times of success really, like when the team are ahead...

Oh :D

Of course, it is also nothing to do with the accoustics. I can never hear the West or North Stands singing but I can't believe no-one does actually sing in other parts of the ground.

At Elm Park you had, what 5k, all cramped together and singing on the South Bank so it's bound to have sounded louder.

Personally, I sing and join in with chants to gee the players up if we've gone a goal down or if we're playing really well. Other times I like to actually enjoy the game and watch it. So, well done you if you sing your heart out for 90 minutes, others of us would prefer to join in at certain other times and if you want to moan about that, come sit next to me next home game and tell me to my face!

MONG ALERT

2 world wars, 1 world cup OUR SUPPORT IS F**KING SH*T.

Throw your toys out the pram all you like those who disagree, but you're wrong and I don't care if this thread p*sses you off.

East stand, you make the old Southbank chantstarters sick that you're allowed in the ground.

Not fit to wear the hoops. Not fit to sit in the East Stand. Not fit to call yourself Reading fans like the generations above you who sung at the tops of our voices to help lift the team from the depths of English football to where we are now.

As ever LOLz @ "embarassing", shockingly low self esteem to be embarassed by some people you don't know not singing very much

I'd add that while the wonderful Leeds fans were noisy when they got going and have one of the best football songs going they were completely silent at times. I just hope nobody got embarassed

LOL @ thinking the South Bank was particularly intimidating. Plenty of games where it was quiet.

Ian Royal
Hampshire Royal Where did the myth that the support at Elm Park intimidated visitin teams? Maybe for the odd season (94/95) or for the odd game but on the whole our support was always quiet. When I was a yoof I used to ask my Dad whether he could hear the South Bank. Most times he couldn't.

Maybe it's something to do with the character of Reading people, but, as I remember, the only times there were decent atmospheres either at Elm Park or the Madejski it was when we had a loud bunch of visiting fans.

So what?

Somebody is remembering McGhee's Wolves visits and thinking that's what it was always like IMO.

The South Bank, 99 times out of a hundred was quiet. Occasionally, something might get the noise going but, more often than not was generally quiet. Sure, there were occasions but not that many.

FTR, the best atmos I have experienced at a Reading game was the first half against Villa in the Cup. The whole place was rocking.

Just accept it that Reading fans are not the noisiest or most passionate in world football.

It really is a myth that other teams hope support is frenzied compared with our own. I've been to plenty of other teams grounds and they are just as quiet as us if nothing much is happening on the pitch. It needs something on the pitch like a late tackle, goal, near miss etc to spark the crowd.

And away support has always been noisier as the supporters are concentrated into a specific part of the ground. The home support is more spread out so the noise is less concentrated.

our support is embarrasing sometimes, the noisest we have been this season is Ipswich at home, but we never seem to be able to get a song going for more than 30 seconds?

Reading's home 'support' is feeble but literally just about anywhere you go is exactly the same. Football these days tells you how to support your team. You can make a noise as long as you don't stand or drink and dance along to a tune we play if we score a goal.

I was at Wycombe last Tuesday, not know as a hotbed of football but you'd think even with a smallish crowd, they've got some terracing and would get their vocal fans together, nope. I can honestly say it was even more quiet than any game I've seen at the Madejski. Someone in our end even asked the Wycombe goalie if it's always this quiet, he smiled and nodded back.

Modern football is to blame for this, is it as easy to 'get behind' a bunch of overpaid pampered mercanaries who as soon as you question their talents even slightly they'll tell you to f*ck off, before proceeding to launch ball number 54 into the upper west stand under no pressure. As i mentioend before, you are told to sit in your designated seats miles away from other people that might want to make some noise at the game, the beer is priced at a level where unless you've got silly money you won't be buying enough to 'get you in the mood' to make some decent noise and even if your team manages to score, they don't want you acting in pure joy, they'd rather control it with some fist pumping dancing. That's the real 21st century 'match day experience'.

Oh give it a rest, Leeds are a team on the up, we're going nowhere and have no ambition, so our support reflects this.

Is it any wonder that are support is crap, as soon as you stand up and shout and support the team you either get told to sit down by stewards or people behind tell you to sit down. Its been a joke of a club for a while now.

Indeed. Is there any other stadium where a supporter would be told off by a steward for shouting too loudly?!! (no swearing, racism or any such offensive words were used)

I thought the atmosphere has been pretty decent in recent games, Norwich and Cardiff etc.

Leeds were here for the day out and are known as one of the loudest supports going. There were occasions in the game where we were louder and there were occasions in the game when they were louder.

Our support isn't the worst or the quietest.
Away support is always better than home support.

Also you have to remember that large parts of that game were very dull. When we got going, the support got behind us.

I think nostalgia is muddling your brain, our support has always been shite, apart from the odd occassion. The old southbank really only sounded better because of the 'old stadium type acoustics'. Take that away and it was no different than todays.
