andrew1957 If we don't go up this season then the likes of Long, Kebe, MCAnuff etc will know that there is no future here and will demand moves away - quite rightly in my opinion. We will replace them with Eastleigh strikers etc and League 1 will be inevitable in the next 2 -3 seasons.

Those that think we can keep the bulk of this squad together without investment and ambition are deluded.

I am still clinging to the hope of a miracle like Blackpool produced last season or I see a very bleak future ahead.

Again, nail on the head. If we don't get promoted than relegation is certain.

Just imagine the disaster if we'd tried a policy of buying cheaper players from the lower divisions after promotion in 2002.

You have to be clever to use sarcasm. And you have to be pretty dumb if you can't spot the difference between then and now. Back then we weren't forced to sell off the talent as soon as it came good. Furthermore, Madejski was actually permitting a reasonable level of investment. Neither hold true now.

Back then we weren't paying our best players high salaries as most of the team had come up with us from the division below, nor were we in a transitional phase caused by selling players we could no longer afford to keep.

But as you said, you have to be pretty dumb if you can't spot the difference between then and now.

I say get Madejski out now. Let's get a Saudi billionaire in and then we can compete properly against the other billionaires.

This time next year we may be properly challenging for a play-off place rather than the miserable 12th place we currently hold.

People are just frustrated RL.

I can understand that - what I don't accept however, are those who think that the only solution is to spend money we haven't got "chasing the dream"...er...no thank you.

Bluntly, we are where we are; bleating about selling Sig is futile as its happened. And it will continue to happen IF we get offers for ANY of our players that the club deem acceptable.

Wanted

Billionaire chairman to take over football club. Club comes with own stadium and loyal fan base of 12000 - 24000, half of whom will never accept anything less than an improvement on the current position, and the other half will moan that things were better in the old days.

Must have more money than sense.

£40 million o.n.o. Will knock off 10% for cash.

Don't forget to mention that a small but vocal group of the fans can't stand the stadium and want to return to a urine ridden hovel in West Reading!

Don't forget to add that stadium naming rights are not included in the price and are not negotiable.

I can't believe that prevents any serious bid coming to fruition though.

How many of the recent takeovers has seen a ground renamed?

I trust Madejski with the club. Yes I want some more funds available, and more importantly spent well, but I'm relatively comfortable that Madejski is holding out for a buyer he trusts will look after and build on his legacy, not just piss it down the river.

So the ground remains named the Madejski Stadium for how many years then Dirk?

Surprised SDR hasn't commented on this thread.

Or does he only comment on thread's he's started?

Hhhmmmmm?

If we don't go up this season, then we'll have to look to next season, all we can do is move on. (where have I heard that before?)

It's not miserable. It's disappointing, but being established in this division for another season is also a relief, after our flirt with the relegation zone last season.

I do not want a Saudi millionaire. I want Reading to continue as they are until the right manager and players come along to make us a force at the top of the table again. It's not just about billionaires: see Blackpool and Burnley for recent examples of success on low budgets.

I wonder if my love for the club would be compromised by it becoming the toy of millionaire foreigners. Would I swap places with Pompey fans? No. You could argue that Pompey fans have memories we don't: winning the cup, doing well in the prem with a string of internationals--James, Kranjcar, Defoe, Crouch, Muntari, Yakubu, Campbell, et al. But for me that would have turned to ashes in my mouth by now, and would seem morally dubious, given the number of creditors who were ripped off to fund the success. OK, not all billionaires are like the string of wideboys who ran Pompey. But where does the money of these various Saudi, Thai, Emirates, Russian, Indian billionaires come from? From corrupt practices in their own countries, from exploitation of their workers, from what may even amount to theft (think Shinawatra)? I'd rather their money be spent on their own poor people than on turning our little British football club into their toy.
