Snowball Gunnar played well v Sheffield but it's often the case
that first game back players do well on adrenaline, but then
look weaker (than that first-game-back) for a while as they get full match-fitness

Tabb at Burnley was very good, and then how long did he take to get some real form?

Players get worse as they near full match-fitness. That's a new one.

HobNobber fails to read properly, fails to think
and then re-writes what was actually posted. SHOCK!

Just for you:

Jay Tabb himself said that for his first game back (v Burnley)
despite not being match-fit, the adrenaline of his first game back "carried
him through".

However, after that game, he felt very tired in games and
did not perform so well. He needed more training and more game time
to get back to something near his best. He is still getting there.

So, NO, they don't get worse. They get one game where they perform well (on adrenaline)
then they play as a player might when not fully-match fit (worse than their one first game back)
and then slowly improve from that lower point as they regain match fitness.

Got out of bed the wrong side this morning?

Except for the fact that your certainty is laughable (all players returning to the first-team play well in their first game? Really? They all immediately suffer in their second? Really?) I think Gunnarsson has given us enough great performances over the years (sometimes in isolated games, sometimes not) to suggest that you can give credit to his performace at Brammal Lane without chalking it up to "adrenaline." He's a smart player with good technique, and though he'll likely not last the 90 I'd be happy to see him start and be replaced by the (arguably) more creative Howard if we need a change later on.
