brendywendy is there a record for the best finish to a season?

would be nice to have the best start andthe best finish, along with 2nd tier points record.

RFC 78-79 finished with 11 games w/o conceding: W8 D3

RFC 66-67 finished with 8 consecutive wins and won first 3 of next season.

As for other clubs - who knows?

tbf 1985-1986 is before a lot of posters on here were born so why would they necessarily know or care about what RFC were up to then

I know almost nothing about RFC (managers, players, records etc) pre about 1990 (Simod Cup excepted)

This seven-game run is the joint fifth best in our history. In 1985 we won 13 games at the start of the season, in 1951/2 we won 12, in 1967 we won 11 (albeit across two seasons) and in 2005 we won ten. We also won seven in 2001/2 and in 1952.

Bandini I thought that we took the record for wins from the start of a season from Spurs (who had the record of 11 wins). Perhaps that's the confusion, if handbags is incorrect (as to which I don't know).

I believe both Baines and Handbags are correct. Spurs may have had a total of fourteen consecutive wins which included the eleven to start the double winning season of 1960/61. This was brought to an end with 2-3 home defeat by Leicester.... I think!

I guess Liverpool fans born after the mid 80s must live wondering if their club will ever win a title.

I wouldn't excpect fans to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the club's history before they got into following Reading, but it strikes me as strange that people just wouldn't care about anything before that date.

I remember Tim Lovejoy saying fans that have an interest in their club's history are "sad", and he's about as a horrible example of the "modern fan" as you can get.

A passing interest if things come up, sure, but I don't think i've ever actually looked up anything about what division we were in in 1963 or what position Tommy Youlden played.

Totally agree with the last bit fo your post.

I understand where you're coming from, Mags, but most seasons the "13 wins at the start of the season" crops up somewhere - if only in a "record watch" in GF.

IMO, the two bits of history that most fans should know about are the Simod Cup and the 13 wins (was three until Van Der Sar broke Death's record).

Yeah but most Reading fans don't come on HNA let alone read General Football.

Didn't Michael Gilkes hold a record too from the penalty shoot out v Coventry in that it was at the time the latest timed goal in a professional football match in the UK at 10.38pm?

Get out clause: David Downs probably wrote about this once in his column.

If I remember correctly Spurs supporters went on about it being easier to do in the lower leagues. I also thought that we'd taken the record off of them too at the time.

Yes. But I think that was beaten by a goal in an England U-21 game.

And, I think, in recent years by a Villa v Liverpool League Cup tie that kicked off around 9pm

In answer to the original question the answer is 14 - see FL stats for any club and 13 for RFC

Can we have another discussion on the source of this rumour?

I think the most telling statistic is that we have lost more FA cup games than any other side.

It's because we are the only professional club in the royal county of berkshire. Preston don't have to wear an away kit because they won the first football league title.

*clutching straws* Didn't Van der Saar conceed in Europe? Death's were completely consecutive competitive matches, so I think technically you could argue it's still a record of sorts.
