Royals-lad14 stupid thread, he is a great leader, can maybe help jobi with his leadership skills, for suggestions of him being captain the day he signs is ludicrous tbh, i always believe a player should be at a club at least 2 years for him to be captain as it shows they are commited and know the club and their surroundings like said above ^^

Like Mills was you mean?

Signed Aug 09
Captain Jan 10

I don't think Mills is the best example of it working and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Royals-lad14 who made the decision to appoint him either...

If think McAnuff is probably the least suitable player to be captain in the squad, with the possible exception of Kebe.

A captain needs to get going when the going gets tough. McAnuff is the polar opposite.

Ian Royal no thanks. Happy with McAnuff for now.

please elaborate on why you are happy with mcanuff's captaincy? what makes him a good captain?

He's intelligent, he's calm, he's experienced and he talks to the players through the game. He's at the heart of a lot of our best play, is a good ambassador of the club and is a respected pro.

Really? I specifically noticed that he didn't do that against Millwall - didn't go to Barnsley or any away games, so can't comment on that - but I even made the comment that he didn't really seem to be the best person for the job.

Having said that, you can't just take it away from him. Unless he was told we were looking at Gorkss and if he came to us, then Jobi would step down - but I doubt it.

Anybody who went to Charlton away will tell you that the captaincy seems to have affect McAnuff's football. It should be Leigertwood no question whatsoever

No idea if he can galvanise the team but for me the trouble with McAnuff being skipper is that his place in the team is strengthened by the 'leadership' role. His starting berth should be under threat from HRK and Antonio/whoever, or he should be able to be subbed if not performing. Taking someone out of defence/midfield and then moving McAnuff into the middle is not a good plan. You need a ball winner in the middle and a ball winner McAnuff ain't.

The 106 'standard substitution' policy was to knacker Little and Convey for an hour or so, and then unleash Hunt and Oster.

Wingers should be expendable.

keep as it is for now, maybe Mcanuff might get an injury for few weeks then can give it to Gorkss go on a winning run and thus keep Gorkss as captain not to disturb the team dynamics

Hoop Blah As much as McAnuff doesn't for the mould of a ranting and raving intimidating rabble rouser of a captain that doesn't mean he isn't the best man for the job within the squad.

The bit on the pitch is, in my opinion, only a small part of being the captain and from what those close to the squad say he is one of the leading characters in the squad and is one of the big talkers and leaders. These were things being said last season long before he was up for the armband so it's not just polite spin in support of his captaincy.

McDermott may feel McAnuff fits better in his style of running things (a bit more considered than some) or that the squad needed a calming influence in the changing room after the lack of discipline that had crept in over the last couple of seasons (Mills' time as on pitch captain and Ingimarsson not having the influence he once had perhaps).

At times it might be of benefit to have a more demonstrative skipper on the pitch but we don't have that player in the squad so I think McAnuff looks and sounds like the best we have.

Agreed pretty much.
I always go back to Sidwell. He may not have been the official captain of Coppell's team but he was certainly the leader both on and off the field. We didn't just lose his tenacity as a footballer when he left.
McAnuff doesn't really need the armband but he's a player all factions of the squad can relate to so it makes sense to me to give him the armband.

Good point Vision. Sidwell, HahnemannHarper, Ingimarsson and even Kitson and Doyle all seemed to be big characters (and obviously Little being the entertainer) who had big positive effects on the mental strength of the squad.

A captain can't make up for a lack of character (if it exists) and I think we look like a squad without too many of the right characters driving it along. Hopefully Gorkss is one of those who will add that to the team.

I went and I'd like to see more than one poor game (where the entire team is poor) before writing him off given all the good work he did last season. Didn't see a problem at Millwall.

McAnuff isn't obvious in his chatter, because he doesn't rant and rave and point fingers like Mills did. He has a quiet word in someone's ear if needed or at least isn't particularly obvious about it.

I've rarely seen much evidence of him doing it at a match, its not the sort of thing that's esy to spot or you look for. But if you watch on TV, where you have a far better close up view and replays. You can see he does it.

Barnsley? Very poor then too. I'm not saying we need someone to rant and rave but when the captaincy armband affects a player's performance you have to question whether he is the right man or not
