Just wanted to congratulate you on promotion to the Prem. I was at Reading Uni at the back end of the 90s/early 00s and spent many a happy hour in various alehouses in town (Great Ex, The Turks, The County Arms and Nue Valbonne in Caversham spring to mind). I also made a few trips to Elm Park and then the Madejski - not so much fun, given the level you (and we) were playing at, but still, I've always retained a soft spot for the Royals (despite having to travel back to Berkshire with a couple of Royals after you'd thumped us 4-0 at the Brit one season. That was fun...)

Anyway, looking forward to an awayday in RG next season...

Great piece - with more to come from the Pardew connections - interesting take on Roberts' contribution.

Personally saw him / his character / his profile as more talismanic that actual contribution to play and scorelines, and good to see Noel get a share of credit too. As with Gorkss contribution to Pearce contribution, so Roberts to Hunt.

Yep, saw that when I was back there last year for a week's holiday (true - my wife and I met in Reading and pop back there every couple of years for old time's sake...). Anyway, was sad (but not entirely surprised) to see that the County was no more. Luckily, most of my other haunts were still going strong (although Bar Ha Ha had also gone, now I think of it...). Had to smile when Brian McDermott said on R5 that he was going to go a late bar to celebrate last night. Purple Turtle, maybe...?
