Wimb Ian Royal All true Wimb... I don't recall ever seeing him touted as £1m smackers. Strap has a pretty good database with player fees on it. He pm'd or emailed a print out from it a few years back. How reliable the figures are is anyone's guess but it seemed pretty complete.
If Strap says it, it's law
Funnilly enough I was drafting a 'most expensive XI' for The Tilehurst End the other day, never got round to finishing it but I think it looked something like. (again rough figures)
GK: Mihalylov (£800k)
LB: Armstrong (£800k)
CB: Mills (£2m)
CB: Mariappa (£2.5m)
RB: Halford(£2.5m)
LM: Convey (£850k... did it ever get disclosed how much it actually was?)
CM: Fae (£2.5m)
CM: Matejovsky (£1.4m)
RM: Seol (£1m)
ST: Lita (£1m)
ST: Asaba (?!) (£800k)
Total cost:
£16.15mTo me that seems a pretty low figure for a side that's spent more than 10 years in the top 2 divisions and 2 1/2 years in the top division.
On the one hand you think, well what if we'd spent a tiny bit more, but more positively it shows that you don't have to spend masses to put a good side together.
The fact that a 1997 signing in Carl Asaba still remains our second highest transfer fee for a striker is a tad embarrassing though! I'll happily be corrected if anyone can think of a more expensive one
Yikes, that's a team with varying quality levels. When you think of our best players over that period it's amazing how many of them have been cheap in comparison.
Sidwell, Harper, Karacan, Kitson, Doyle, Long, Cureton, Forster, Roberts(?), Le Fondre, Pogrebnyak, Ingimarsson, Sonko, Gorkss, Pearce, Shorey, Little, SHunt etc. All cost barely over £500k, if that.
I don't find Asaba being in there embarassing (other that we paid that much for him), I think it's just a sign of how brilliant we are at recruiting low cost strikers who do the business.
Be interesting to see what the lowest cost team of quality players you could put together would be.
