Former RFC player/legend and occasional HNA? poster "All Five Goals" got his name because we all turned up so late and drunk to the match that he started cheering when the first goal went in!

Of course, when Hicks went up to lift the Simod Cup, I was there

Maguire My first ever football match.

Was saying last Saturday that I feel like the fan version of Bobby Mihailov. "Oh this is good dad, can we come back for the next game?"

25 years of bullshit later, thanks a lot.

Its certainly one of the first full games I remember

Watched 1/3 of the home games in the cup run from our loft.

I say 1/3 as you could only see 1/3 of the pitch from our loft! ... right end for pens though 8)

Stuka I think we're setting ourselves up for a bit of mockery if we make too much of a big deal about the 1988 Simod Cup.
With all due respects.....that is the most dickheadly comment that I have ever read on HNA (and that includes some of my own) :|

Rudolph Hucker Richard Wickson of the ex players association put together an excellent 20th anniversary dinner in 2008 where just about the whole Simod Cup winning team attended but had to hold it in the Holiday Inn on Basingstoke Road as the slub would not allow them to use a function room at the stadium. Seems to me the club are in denial about anything that happened before 1998. At the time of the Simod Cup win it was probably the highlight of 117 years of Reading FC history and was easily the best day of my life and having talked to the players, the best day of theirs too! I wish the club would continue to celebrate this momentous occasion but it's like it never happened to the current owners.......

I do think the new owner is far more open in acknowledging our history than the SJM, look at the way the stadium has been refurbished with the fantastic floor-to-ceiling old photos. I don't know if they've got anything planned for the 25th anniversary but it wouldn't surprise me if the had. I'm hopeful that some kind of museum space will be introduced to the stadium at some point, I've seen a display case with old memorabilia that's been added to the players lounge recently.

Heard they're doing some sort of presentation at half-time on Saturday.

I believe the club still have the Simod trophy so there's no barrier to getting Hicksie along to lift it again before the Saints game. And if their fans start getting arsey about we've always got "You've never won the Simod" to go along with "Campiones".

Whore Jackie Heard they're doing some sort of presentation at half-time on Saturday.

Which seems a bit bizarre as we're playing QPR on the 28th.

Anyway, it'll be good for me as Aston Villa will be my last trip over this season.

FTR, to my eternal regret, I got so pissed I genuinely remember little of the game other than jumping up and down a lot and managing to climb from the front of the terracing to the back to be with my mates.

It was a club philosophy for the last decade or so, specifically championed by Craig Mortimer-Zhika, to actively ignore anything that happened to Reading football club pre-Madejski Stadium. It was/is seen as unbecoming of a progressive, forward thinking football club.

Which is exactly the sort of homlordery one would expect from a man who takes his wife's surname.

Edit: Nice work from Le Mesmer.

I think you will find the club have a replica "simod cup".............the real cup was presented to Nottm Forest after they

won the final simod cup final in 1989.

I could be wrong.................I was once!

I think you're wrong - I think SJM bought the original when it became available about 10 years ago.

Making something big, in the public glare of the Premiership, of winning a tin pot crapola competition like the Simod Cup would make us laughing stocks so let's just not go there.

When it gets to the point where people are suggesting we airbrush our history and fail to celebrate and recognise what is still arguably our most successful cup campaign and one of our most loved teams for fear of being a "laughing stock" amongst the permiership big boys then its time we got relegated so we can go back to having a proper regard for our history and where we've come from.

I went on the stadium tour the other day, & in the trophy room they said Mr Mad had a full size replica made & send that back when the year was up, keeping the original :)

What a day. I for one will be donning my (now replaced, adult sized) replica yellow jersey and basking in the faint glow that still emanates from that glorious occasion.

Special memories for a young lad at the time.
Tens of thousands of Reading fans, the now obligatory drunk local butcher swinging from the lamp post at the end of Wembley way, to name a couple.

Absolute halcyonery.

Was a whippersnapper at the time but remember clearly the drive down there on the motorway and the amount of cars with blue & white on them, car horns going off etc. Also remember seeing a 'Smelly Ally Barmy Army' bus too.

Spent most of the game not being able to see as I was so short.
