Thanks Naughty Sausage (how did you think of that name), I hope Southampton stay up, but honestly agree its far too late for us now. If anything this should of happened after the Wigan free fall. If he does keep us up I will run from Bournemouth to Reading in the nude and build a statue of the great man outside the stadium!

I am not sure about your new manager. His inability to speak English harks problems long term for me, but he is still running Adkins team really.

On the note of Portsmouth, I do have a family history with them where my great grandfather played for them just after WW1... However I do prefer your lot. Anyway there going to the depths to spend some time with our friends the Aldershit :)

Good post, a good mate of mine is a Saints fan and, like pretty much all of you, he was gutted when Adkins was sacked because he genuinely did not deserve it. Unlike McDermott who, despite what some think, needed to go.

From an outside/neutral perspective, it might seem as harsh on McDermott as it was on Adkins, and might look as though some Reading fans are being ungrateful because of what McDermott did for us. Actually, we are very grateful (though many are still wondering how it happened) but the main difference is simply the football the sides played. Anyone who has watched us play regulary this season, or even a few times, will know that we have played dire football and have been well out of our depth tactically. Ive seen comments on the internet recently such as "its very harsh on McDermott because Reading played attractive football". This proves how clueless neutrals can be if they only watch the 5 minute MOTD highlights. I cant be bothered to say anymore about all that what has been wrong with us this season, because I already have enough times.

I am delighted with the appointment of Adkins and, despite the apparent belief we can stay in the Premier League, we will probably go down. The main thing is, the appointment of Adkins has been made with next season in the Championship in mind and that is what I am most happy about. He is the best man for the job, great CV and knows what it takes to get his teams promoted while most importantly, playing great football. I have seen this first hand because Ive Saints play once this season with my mate (Stoke away), twice last season, and once the season before on the final against Walsall (where you secured promotion to the champ), and joined in the pitch invasion :P (and Ive experienced three of them, twice with us and that one) 8)

I would like to say very well done to AZ for making a brave but correct decision to sack McD, and doing his very best to make sure he got the perfect candidate on board. The near future of our club is was looking dark and gloomy, but we are now leaving that tunnel and the sun is shining on the horizon.

floyd__streete Good post, thank you. I hope that Southampton stay up, good club. Always preferred you lot to Pompey.

I used to think that was like a choice between Aids and Syphilis... But since Saints got relegated from the Prem and down to League One they've really grown on me. I think they seem to have gone about things pretty well and have had good players and played good football. I'd be happy to see them in the PL for quite some time, and hope we can re-establish some friendly rivalry with them there sometime soon.

Cheers for the input guys. I really like the cut of Adkins' jib.

Great post, and only further enforced my belief in him. Thanks!

I'd like to see him use a few youngsters as subs (Obita, Samuel etc.).

Great post thank you for taking the time and effort. I would still argue that BM's achievments over a 3 year period are better the NA's. Taking a team cut adrift at the bottom of the championship to 9th, play off final, Champions. And two cup quater finals. On a smaller budget than Adkins had.

See, and there was me hoping the appointment was made with the Prem in mind, otherwise I'm not real sure why you'd make it. (Of course, Adkins is not exactly a proven commodity in the Prem anyway, but we won't go there. Yet.) But even for anyone not a fan of McD, I've not really heard anyone say he didn't at least deserve another shot in the Champ. With his record, that would be a hard case to make. Or else, the other managers in the Champo right now are having a laugh.

Top post, Mr Sausage.

So, basically, Nigel - conjures up visions of either the Young Ones or XTC for me - is just like Maccy D in many ways, except he wants to get the ball on the deck and, errr, pass it. That'll be novel.

OK, so I'll be the first to say that I think it is a better choice to opt for Adkins to get us out of the Championship and I wouldn't have been in favour of giving McDermott another shot. It will be hard enough for Adkins, as a breath of fresh air, to lift everyone and get us straight back up at first attempt. I'm afraid that McDermott would have had very little chance of achieving that. Just look at what happened with Coppell who I believe was a better manager and had a stronger squad when we went down. And if Adkins fails at the first attempt, at least we can look forward to watching a more pleasing style of football.

Whilst I didn't agree with McDermott's sacking and would have been happy to see him given the chance to get us back up (IMO he earned that right by getting us promoted on fcuk all) I am not disappointed with Adkins. He seems to come across as a very confident person, seems to play football the right way and likes his teams to attack. The fact loads of Saints fans were very unhappy with his sacked and rightly so, is a good thing. Hopefully we get a few Saints boys in (Puncheon anybody) :D

p.s Good luck to Brian wherever he ends up, will always clap him when he returns to the mad stad!

Great post.

I just question one thing. Your assumption that if we pull off a miracle, that it will be to the detriment of Villa.....at this stage of the season last year, you had 5 points over us.

This season you've only got 4....

Squeaky bum time.

The Naughty Sausage Good evening Royals fans, Saints fan here.

It's fair to say a little piece of me died inside (and many other Saints fans, too) when we saw NA at the unveiling. The blue tie, the cheeky quips, the trademark honesty and integrity - we still miss that and will likely always will do.

I thought I'd stop by and give you a personal low-down on NA both as a person, manager and what can you expect in the upcoming months. But first, I feel I must flesh out this post a little bit before I continue.

When NA arrived at Saints, we were completely underwhelmed. The Scunny fans told us that we'd got a real gem but most of us were Googling him trying to find out more about him not just as a manager, but as a person. We'd expected a bigger name, a thoroughbred if you like and we ended up with what we perceived was a lucky physio.

How absolutely wrong we were and as you all know, his stock has risen quite considerably since the B2B promotions and his first venture into the PL.

Anyway, I digress. The first couple of months were painful, progress-wise. We looked like we regressed initially as a team, with stuttering performances and unconvincing results. The one constant was NA's positive and infectious attitude - he kept drumming on (to some, it was irritating but to others, it was clear he was changing the focus and mentality of the club for the better) about being "Together As One". This was textbook PMA and as a club, the supporters and players responded by buying into his mantra.

Not to soon after, results took a positive upturn. We began to look like a side fighting as one, a side who'd run through a brick wall for their manager. It was clearly evident within 3-4 months that NA's influence was beginning to show. We started to play attacking, free-flowing, exciting football. It was very rare to walk away from St. Mary's or elsewhere that season without thinking you'd got your money's worth and more.

After promotion to the Championship, NA continued to repeat his PMA slogans ad infinitum whilst steadily adding to a fairly capable squad. Notably, he bought players with exceptionally solid backgrounds (a family, settled) and never hankered after notorious trouble makers or any big names. He chose players with the right attitude, of good character and equally importantly, solid, technically gifted footballers.

Well, you know what happened that season in nPC. You won the league, but we were momentously happy to get a return to the Premier League as well. We'd like to think that we too done it in style, playing attractive, free-flowing, passing football - a type of football we hadn't seen since the 80's. Arguably he's the best manager we've ever had achievements wise - this, however, is countered by people who can remember a bit further back but for the likes of me and my generation, it was the most fun we've ever had as Saints supporters.

This was almost entirely down to Nigel and his staff.

We were absolutely gutted when he was relieved of his duties - and it still upsets quite a few people to this day. He was a fantastic manager, person and motivator and he'll have you playing attractive, winning football if you buy into his methods and mantras and back him 100%. You're lucky to have him, we'll miss him, that's for sure.

So what for you guys? How will his reign begin? Personally, I think you're two games short of giving it a real good go. If there was ten games left, I'd have said he'd have a half-decent chance of pulling you clear. As it stands, there's only 8 games left and I'm not sure if you can make up the points difference in time (though I hope you will as it'd be delightful to see Aston Villa, QPR and ANother go down).

However, if the worst does happen

you are relegated, be sure to know that you'd be in safer hands than us (I'm not really sure I could trust MP in the nPC, despite the way we've been playing recently). He's an astute manager and he knows the league (and the ones below) and more often than not, a good tactician (though some Saints would disagree with that).

The pretty, winning football won't happen over night. It'll be a good month or so before you seen any of this bear fruition but soon you'll be noticing the patterning-of-play changing and quick, passing, football being installed. You'll be ropey at the back sometimes, sure but you'll create more than enough opportunities to win games. I'd bet that if you start Le Fondre and you're creating chances then you'll have a good, fighting chance.

Whatever happens, good luck for the rest of the season. Look after NA for us, he's a real treasure! :D

PS: If there's anything else you want to know that I haven't mentioned, just ask - I'll try fill in the gaps if I can.

Excellent post, thanks for the info and please stick around because it's always good to hear the opinions of fans from other clubs.
