My good frind floyd (from off the board as well as on) appear to have a difference of opinion on Adkins. floyd, I'm sure will confirm, feels his style of play is too open, although personally I much prefer an open style of football.

My own personal take on things regarding openness is that just a matter of 6-7 years ago we had a manager who was able to merge both defensive solidity with open, attractive, exciting attacking football. We scored 99 goals and conceded just 32 in 05/06, an extraordinarily exceptional season which carried on the season after in the Premier League. We were spoilt, it is rare to be able to find any side that merges both those fundamental footballing facets and I think many Reading fans use that as the benchmark, and incorrectly so. It shouldn't be the benchmark, it is the pinnacle for a club of our stature.

Unfortunately Nigel has been left a load a dross which he has began weeding out. However some of these are on high wages such as the Pog and cant be moved on easily. I am more concerned in case Nigel walks rather than if it works out as I'm sure it will over time. He cant make a purse from a pigs ear.

I am for one slightly envious of your team with players like Lallana and Cork capable of becoming top players but at Southampton moving forwards. We had one of these type of players, and subsequently flogged him  (Gylfi)[/quote]

I worry Cork may struggle to get a look in this season, Wanyama looks to have nabbed his spot.

I did wonder if Nigel would come looking for a few players of ours like Cork, Sharp and Hooiveld who all may be usurped by this summers signings. Has he got much in the way of a transfer kitty there?

The Real Sandhurst Royal Having 6 (six) put past you by a lower division club in the League Cup gives HNA something to discuss even if some of the posts in some of the threads are over the top and reactive to the loss.

Last time we didn’t make it back to the Premier League at the first attempt under Coppell so Adkins can hopefully go one better this season and write his name in Reading’s history books just as Steve Coppell and Brian McDermott have done before him!!

If we do go back up and that's a big IF this season, we will come straight back down unless we invest in more quality players

MytchettSaint Hi all,

Sorry for poking my nose in but thought I'd read your board and see what your take was on last night and how Nigel was being received.

Got to be honest I wasn't surprised when I saw you'd been beaten but was by how much. It reminded me of Leeds away in this cup last season for us. Most Saints fans still have steam coming out of their ears over that result/performance/team selection but it seems NA doesn't take this comp at all seriously. I wouldn't let this cloud your judgement too much. I read on another thread about the time it's taking to change the footballing philosophy at Reading and again it sounds like the same discussions we had when he'd been with us for a couple of months, I remember watching a game against Oldham at home in league one thinking 'christ what the foook is going on here' but to be fair to him he came good when he'd got his team playing his way. I was gutted when he was sacked back in January but now I think he'd perhaps made to many silly mistakes in the top league that he got away with a season earlier. I still want him to succeed as he was a genuinely nice and passionate guy at our place as well as successful so I hope he's a success with you lot. Be good personally to have that close by game again on our fixture list.

Peace and Love.

Thanks. This post has helped me with my rehab.

Maguire Admittedly not seen a game yet this season but reports and results suggest we look alright. Not sure why a second string cup defeat has made everyone go mental.

Actually I do know why. They're idiots.

Ain't that the truth.

+1 to HH btw.

Yeah, he's fixed that by not making substitutions.

What's the point in making three when you really need to make 11 to have any significant positive effect.

Nigel Adkins is planning a late dash into the transfer market in a bid to secure three signings before the window shuts on Monday night.

Since capturing Wayne Bridge, Royston Drenthe and Danny Williams, Royals’ boss has endured a frustrating time as he has looked to add to his squad.

Adkins has seen targets move elsewhere and admits deals he thought were concluded, have fallen through at the last minute.

But he is still very active and says there are a busy few days ahead for everyone at the club as they look to bolster the ranks.

“There are three positions I would like to strengthen,” he said.

“We’ve still got a few days left and a lot of business is done in that time.

“I still like to think we are going to improve the group.”

Adkins, who takes his side to Yeovil tomorrow, admits he would have preferred to have completed his business by now but says getting deals over the line is never easy.

He said: “You have to understand what goes on behind the scenes.

“Maybe there are one or two deals that we had done that have fallen down for one reason or another, but you keep them private.”

Reading’s biggest priority this summer has to be to land a new striker and they were interested in Gary Hooper and Charlie Austin.

Hooper moved to Norwich, however, while Austin switched to QPR, both for fees in excess of £4 million.

So far this summer Royals’ only cash outlay has been in bringing in Williams for £700,000 from Hoffenheim.

When Adkins was asked if he has the resources to spend big, he replied: “Whatever the finances are and how we go about our business, I think it’s important that it’s all private.

“There are many different ways deals can be constructed.”

It is ridiculous to say Adkins has been left with loads of dross. Just look at our squad that won this division in May 2012. The current squad is light years better than what Brian had to work with then. He made huge strides in improving it on a very limited budget. And Pog was the owner's decision not Brian's. It was said at the time how Anton persuaded Pog and got his man as the marquee signing at the start of the PL season and everyone on here applauded - so hardly Brian's fault that it did not work out.

The honest answer here is that we dont know how much the budget is. There were a few murmerings that we would be boosting our squad to the tune of £25 million at the start of the season, but there were no indications if this would go down depending on wages being paid. This is my biggest grind with the old heirachy and the new heirachy too. They arent transparant enough, they make noises and for the past 5 or 6 windows havent satisfied them. In fact like mentioned about Gylfi we always seem to flog those that do well. Maybe this is Anton's biggest legacy, that we dont need to sell the likes of McCarthy (if we do, this forum will be inaccessable from the amount of frustration thrown about)

Traditionally in the Championship we have always been in the top 6 for paying wages, and I am sure that only QPR and maybe Nottingham Forest would be above us in that respect this season. I'd love to see Cork playing in a Reading shirt, but I think you have absolutely no concerns there as I cant imagine he'd want to drop a division. Maybe a loan would be realistic. Sharp is most likely of the three you named to be fair.

I am confident given time, Adkins will come good. If that is this season or next is dependant. He has a marquee signing in Drenthe which he should aim to build the team around. Royston seems happy here, but I'm sure he will be expecting to play Premier League football as soon as possible and not going up could start to put some doubts in his head. I want us to stick with Nigel as I want to become a bit more like Southampton who are a stable, sensible club with a great quality side. I think he can replicate the success he's had. But if hes not given the funds or if the fans jump on his back, I am fearful he will walk should a Norwich or a Newcastle come calling - which I think they will do eventually.

Nice attempt at revisionism. Anton ensured the deal happened - but it's clear Brian really wanted the player. For example:

Brian McDermott “Nicky Hammond and I went to Wigan v Wolves at the back end of last season and we went to the hotel to meet our owner [Zingarevich] and he knew that I love Pavel.

I thought he was a terrific player and we talked about him for a long, long time and after about an hour of sitting with Anton, Pavel walked through the door.

“It was the first time I had met him and I was in shock. It was a really nice gesture, I have to say. I met him, spoke to him and we got on really well.

“We did the deal after about two months but it was a difficult deal to put together but we’re delighted to get him.”

anton- what do you think of the play pogrebnyak who was at fulham
brian- yes i think he is a good player, ive seen him a few times, and he seems to have the requisite ability to make it in the prem.
anton- well guess what brian, hes here tonight, and ive already started the process of buying him.

doesnt really sound like he was "fully" in control of the transfer

Exactly why owners shouldnt get involved in the purchasing of players... especially useless ones who are on a loan to make them look good.

Actually - why would they be on loan if they were any good anyway? Anyone know what Pog was like for Stuttgart

Brian wanted the player - Anton was instrumental in closing the deal. Any attempt to portray Pog as an Abramavich type signing is truly risible.

 thats very poor imo

i love busted, and have told my girlfriend as much

but if she turned up with them unannounced at my house to play a gig, it wouldnt have been me who initiated it andsorted it all out, and it certainly would be risable to suggest it was.
