Bookies list clubs on valuable offer to it's customers, not where they think they will finish

Tell you what, 20/1 to go down or 16/1 to go up suggests we'll be mid-table. Which on balance is exactly where I think we will finish. I think I had suggested 14th/15th place finish would be a satisfactory achievement assuming our squad had no significant additions. Reckon I'll stand by that for the time being.

The 16/1 is for us to win the league, to get promoted we're around 6/1. Big difference

glad we are in agreement on something Whatevs, after % of game r8-g8 and all.

I hate when people think bookies odds are in actual fact their prediction of what will happen. It's like going to a shop one day and deciding the most expensive version of an item must be the best, then the next day when the shop puts it half price for a week making it the cheapest to tempt people to buy it, you decide it must now be the worst as it is the cheapest.

I mentioned on the General footy betting thread that I run a footy tipping site on the side - http://www.redtipster.co.uk

Footy betting is really hard to make money on because the odds of what should happen are usually so short as to not be worth bothering with, and what is supposed to happen seldom happens anyway! I met the CEO of Paddy Power earlier this year and he said that they sometimes take an absolute bath on horse racing when a favourite wins a big race, but footy betting is their most profitable market almost bar none.

This is an example of it - ill researched articles (let's face we are not going up or down, but the non-RFC supporting punter won't know that) encouraging people to back things that won't happen. They are not going to go on and tell you what they really think will happen.....that's something they hope you won't work out for yourselves.

Ian Royal They're almost certainly not paid to be experts on Reading.

Cheers for that. 6/1 to get promoted is no value whatsoever. Seem to remember a website that compared most of the online bookies odds for season-long events, but sadly cannot find now. Be interesting to see what they all think about our chances. Of course, should 4/5 DECENT squad additions be made, then the odds today might be worth a look, but having been caught like that last season ....

Story of the past five seasons (taken off Racing Post)

13-14 1st Leicester (14/1) 2nd Burnley (80/1) 3rd Derby (33/1)
12-13 1st Cardiff (12/1) 2nd Hull (28/1) 3rd Watford (33/1)
11-12 1st Reading (18/1) 2nd Southampton (20/1) 3rd West Ham (5/1)
10-11 1st QPR (12/1) 2nd Norwich (18/1) 3rd Swansea (25/1)
09-10 1st Newcastle (8/1) 2nd WBA (13/2) 3rd Nottingham Forest (25/1)

And just for good measure we were 25/1 when we won in 05/06

The people the bookmakers get the odds from are paid to be experts on the statistics of football teams, but they themselves are probably not. They're experts on the public perceptions of sports teams.

Took 18/1 for relegation. As expecting a lack lustre start. With an obvious shortage of firepower upfront.

Will cash in though when in profit.

They also call Danny Williams a defender so I definitely wouldn't pay attention to what they think.

I have £20 on us to be relegated at 20/1 (placed when the takeover looked to be falling apart) and £25 on us to lose at Wigan at evens.

The latter bet is, I think, an astonishing price, we will either have several kids in the squad or a handful who have been there for 1 day.
