It seems he's also well aware what some fans think of him that he felt he needed to apologise after his hat-trick for not scoring more goals before.

Ouroboros
kwik-silva That is nowhere near good enough for a player who was brought in to score goals, especially considering some of the chances he's had. Nick Blackman was scoring far more regularly, and Vydra's hat-trick has rather inflated his stats some what.

Yeah, scoring goals will do that. Pretty sneaky of him.

Yeah sure, of course, but I remember many people saying the same thing about ALF that two hat-tricks wildly inflated how good he actually was in that season. If you take his stats in the league then they're incredibly poor, and people can keep saying that 'he'll come good', but he should have come good already. Loan signings are not brought in to provide a long term solution, they are for short term impact, something which Vydra has completely failed to provide. When you consider that he is effectively also our record transfer then it's completely ludicrous.

Obviously if he manages to turn it around now and have a good second half of the season then he will go some way to making it up, but he's been a complete waste of money,

In my opinion, forget about the goals, Vydra has made an excellent contribution to the team this season. No one can deny his work rate, commitment and attitude, all of which has been first class.

His lack of scoring can be attributed to an extent to poor mangement decisions and not utilising him correctly.
Just look back to Kevin Doyle. His best goal scoring seasons were when he was partnered with Dave Kitson. Doyle is a good support striker playing off a target man. When Kitson was sold following our relegation to the Championship and Doyle was now the main man, he found life a lot tougher and endured a long goal scoring drought as our season imploded and we failed to secure promotion at the first attempt. He then went to Wolves and was often played as a lone striker and never could score the same number of goals as he managed in two excellent seasons with the Royals.

Vydra is similar in many respects. He really needs to play with Orlando Sa or now hopefully with Yann Kermorgant and I'm sure we will get more out of Vydra. Vydra is a class act and if he is supported properly with a genuine target man striker alongside him, he will score goals.

Vydra has made a heck of a contribution to the team this season and has made a real difference in the past few weeks which is astonishing that people don't seem to be able to recognise. Particularly that BBC radio broadcaster.

In contrast to Blackman who went 1000(ish) games without scoring, then called the fans a bunch of pcunts when he finally did score.

Yes, he's been misused in some cases, but the amount of absolute sitters he's managed to miss is not down to that it's down to himself. Equally that rather contradicts the 'he gets in positions' argument. If he gets in positions often enough, he clearly doesn't need a strike partner, he needs to finish better; although I'll concede that he could be picked out more regularly than he is being at the minute.

But Blackman was never given the same leeway as Vydra's being given despite suffering from many of the same issues; the difference is he was able to come good later on because he was a permanent signing, whereas Vydra isn't.

It is a myth that he has missed lots of sitters. Don't listen to Dellors over exaggerations. He may have missed one sitter. He has been guilty perhaps of over playing on occassion. When we have been in a good position, maybe playing an extra pass when he should perhaps have a crack himself. Does that come down to confidence? I don't know. The good news is, he is now coming good. Confidence is returning. The great man manager McDermott is being proven right.

When you have a class act like Vydra with a proven record you shouldn't just cast him aside. Work with him and get the best out of him. When he starts delivering, he will be too hot to handle for alot of defences in this division. Let's get the best out of him instead of constantly trying to bring him down.

I'd say the reason for that, is perceived attitude. During his goal drought Vydra has never stopped trying. Whereas Blackman always looked sulky and disinterested.

I don't listen to Dellor, this is based on games that I've been to. 'Confidence is returning' - is that based on a hat-trick against ten men in one game? I hope you're right, 'cause so far it takes him the best part of two games (170 minutes) just to get a shot on target.

I agree, but Vydra has been given a much bigger opportunity than Blackman ever was in his first couple of seasons here - he played more minutes for us this season than in either of the two previous which just shows how little he was actually used by Adkins; I'm not surprised he was somewhat fed up.

So tell me about all these sitters that he has missed?

Just in the last few games Vydra has:

Fired in a hatrick against Huddersfield.
Won the ball, played it to Kanu who then set up Williams to score at Derby.
Scored a cracker away at Huddersfield
Won us the game against Bristol City by fighting until the end. He won us the ball back in midfield and set us away for the winning goal.

His contribution game by game is outstanding. And you want him out of the team.... Do you want Cox in there instead then?

Difference between Vydra and Blackman are that:
Vydra contributes offensively when not scoring
Vydra contributes defensively
Vydra has proved he has plenty of quality at this level before he joined
Vydra is going through a bad patch amongst mostly good.
Blackman had a good patch amongst mostly bad.

It's clear that persistence with Vydra has a good chance of paying off. McDermott did it with Long. Vydra's now got 4 in 3/4 since Blackmsn left. The signs are positive if a bit early.

MK Dons, Brentford, Wolves, Blackburn - missed sitters or 1v1s in all four. The only reason he's having to run around so much to impress is because he's missing his own chances.

Top Flight Just look back to Kevin Doyle.

Think you're rewriting history a bit there.

Doyle's goalscoring record for us:
45 - 18
32 - 13
36 - 6
41 - 18

I can't be bothered to go through and find who he was partnering in each of those matches, so this isn't going to be precise.

First season in the Championship, he mostly played alongside Kitson, but also Lita. 18 goals.
Second season, Premier League, Kitson gets injured on the opening day, and only makes 12 more appearances. Most of Doyle's goals come from partnering Lita, Seol, or Long. 13 goals.
Third season, Premier League. Doyle spends a few matches on the right wing. Kitson is our main striker. Doyle has his worst season for us.
Fourth season, Championship. Doyle forms a great partnership with Noel Hunt. His form drops dramatically in the second half of the season when Hunt is injured and Doyle partners Kitson again (or else Lita or Long). Personally, I've always put that drop down to referees not giving him enough protection. 18 goals, mostly in the first half of the season.

That's all pretty irrelevant because I think Vydra is someone who does best with a powerful strike partner, but he just scored a hattrick without one. I think Vydra-Piazon could be the new Doyle-Hunt (or Long-Hunt).

Well, exactly, and frankly his prior Championship career means absolutely nothing now he's in a Reading shirt. He's missed simple chances here and hasn't justified his £2.5m loan fee. He works hard, yes, and he has contributed to goals in some form, but not enough for me.

Forget about his loan fee. That is completely irrelevent. Vydra didn't ask Reading and Watford to agree a £2.5million loan fee for him.
Get his loan fee out of your head. If you are unhappy that Reading spent £2.5million on a loanee then start pointing the finger at Hammond and Howe. Not fricking Vydra.

The question is should Vydra be in or out of the team. Do we have players in the club who will perform better than Vydra if selected on Saturday?

I believe, based on Vydra's work rate, commitment, contribution, assists, goals etc... He should be in the team.

Do you think he should or should not be in the team? If not, who should play instead?

Get his loan fee out of your head. It has nothing to do with Vydras form or contribution to the team and results. That is a business issue and you should raise your ire with Hammond if that was a poor decision. It should not be an added burden on Vyrda's shoulders.

I would probably leave him as an impact sub and play Piazon or HRK off Sa. Particularly considering all three have played a part in five goals, but Vydra has played more minutes than the other two.

Nor me. Like you say has contributed in some way but that's enough and certainly not in the way he and his goalscoring record elsewhere was brought in to make a difference.
