I think, for a player in the latter stages of their career, playing a high-tempo, high-pressing passing game is going to be tough, he probably can't start 2 games a week, every week.

That said, he can definitely still perform. I'd like to see him played on his own up front, used interchangeably with Ehib, like-for-like, with Azeez/Knibbs playing just behind.

I would like him to transition into a coaching role at the club, he has played at the highest levels, I think he can offer the players a lot.

He doesn't rank anywhere near the list.

Insane to suggest he could be our worst ever signing.

I didn't even want to engage with this discussion, but as others have said he doesn't suit the pressing style. I do think he can link up effectively on the floor, somewhat like Dave Kitson, however he's being really targeted by the opposition as we saw on Saturday at Vale Park. If he'd scored the penalty I think it would've been entirely different, but that's life.

Also, his influence around the squad is repeatedly brought up as a huge positive. That's something we need to focus on when he is not playing the best, and we need to get behind him like the rest of the team.

Carroll is fine, problem as others say is either due to the lack of confidence or football intelligence we've had in the side, his presence lends itself to lump it up and hope.

In L1, he is going to get very close attention, so his presence should actually allow us to play quickly into half-gaps that will appear and look for him from pull backs and crosses rather than just hitting him from distance.

Major concern is that with him as a focal point, in 2023, we've managed a whopping 17 goals from 23 games, so we have to find a way to attack better either with or without him.

Just like Pogrebnyak, Carroll is an excellent player, which the management does not know how to use!

Now there's a player who is in the conversation.

The signing that arguably started our decline.

In terms of talent, he isn't. In terms of cost to the club, he most certainly is.

Signings is surely all about value added vs cost, not really about ability. Otherwise it would be 'worst players'.

Haven't posted for a decade but had to log in to reply to this one due to the nonsense.

We signed 7 players in ONE DAY, 5 of which were worse signings than Carroll.

I always thought Howie did ok, although he definitely declined and we did upgrade. I remember Gray being not awful, but that may be confusion from the old Champ Man games, which had a habit of making our worst players world beaters. Holsgrove was my star player for some reason.

Yeh Howie was the other but I could have said 6. Not the best keeper but did a job for us for a few years.

And of course Brayson is the correct answer to who is our worst ever signing.

Nah Oillie Kearns was dreadful, may have scored a few but missed far more chances, the Goat likewise.

We have a winner. Wins by 1 1/2 lengths ahead of another, at the time record signing, Steve Moran.

Hardly played sure, but hard to argue it's our worst ever signing when we made £1 million on a player that was with us for 6 months?

The fee we received was down to the fact we had good people in key positions at the club, namely Nicky Hammond.
