faithless the wonderboy Simulation is a cancer in the game I love, and I have the cure...

Any player that is booked for diving during the game or, found to have dived following review of video evidence is required to wear a coloured armband (yellow would be good) for, say, the next three games. If they are found guilty of diving during this 'probation' period, they are automatically punished by a ban.

Imagine the grief the players on 'probation' would get from opposing supporters.

Alas, I can't claim the credit for this fantastic idea. I heard it on the radio a while back and think it was going to be trialed somewhere...heard nought since.

PS Hats off to the guys with 'artistic impression' and 'technical merit' score cards in the east stand

This must be one area where video should be used to go back and punish the diver. During the game the referee should be allowed to *make a diving motion to indicate to the video referee to check if there was a dive before awarding a penalty.
*AKA doing the Johnson

I thought the referee was mean to AJ today not to give him a penalty.
that looks like a wicked slope behind the goal at the Cottage

I just laughed at him - definite penalty not given. Shades of the boy who cried wolf.

In all fairness, Hleb was caught and 99% of strikers would have gone down, but the Hammers defender got a vital toe-poke on the ball. As Redknapp said in summarising 'the ref flipped a coin and got it right'.

By the way, Johnson, Hleb and that West Ham defender all look like gypsies.

FWIW, I do know that the English FA has submitted to IFAB (the body who actually make the rules) a proposal for a rule change which will allow retrospective punishment for "simulation".

This will be discussed at the IFAB session in March.

How about a retrospective puishment against the team not just the player. For example, if it can be proven after the match that a player dived to win a penalty (a la Zokora), if said penalty is scored the goal can be stricken from the records after the event.

In that one case, Spurs would lose 2pts, which could in turn cost them money, Euro qualification poss. even relegation. It would be a massive, massive deterrent that could stop it at a stroke.

This would not go far enough because the penalty for being caught diving after the game would be no greater than the penalty for not getting away with it in front of the referee - you would not get the goal.

I think the goal that results should be transferred to the other team and a retrospective red card should suspend the player for at least one game.

The penalty for diving to produce a goal scoring opportunity should be no less than the penalty for a foul which prevents a goal scoring opportunity.
