- He's strong on the ball
- He wins the ball and holds it up
- He uses the ball well
- He's decent in the air
- He's an excellent finisher
- He can anticipate
- He always puts in 110% and doesn't give the defender a second
- He's pretty fast
- He's down to earth and has the right attitude

The above factors mean that he's quality and I wouldn't swap him for anyone other than Rooney in terms of Premiership strikers.

Doyle is a very good player, not arrogant or big headed just gives his all every game.

I agree with earley royals post earlier in the thread, spot on.

He isn't the quickest
He's got enough pace for the premiership.

Okay in the air
He's very good in the air! How many flicks on does he win against big defenders that are pretty good themselves in the air?!

Pretty strong
Very strong, Can shrug most players off the ball.

First touch is average
I think his first touch is class, he always seems to create his own space from his first touch.

No great tricks
You don't need to use any tricks if you are good at all the above!

so what is it that puts him amongst the top scorers in the Premiership?
Because he takes all his decent chance he has and the fact that he has scored 7 goals?

Because he is a Premiership Class player and building a very good reputation on the international scene with Ireland aswell.

OK i maybe a bit biased as im also irish but i think Kevin Doyle is a class act, he has shown what he is capable of in the premiership and hes only going to get better.

I can think of another player, who was not quick, strong or any of the other things listed, however a certain Mr Sheringham is still knocking them in now...and Why? - because he is one of the cleverest players in the league, and Doyle reminds me of him. Reads the game well, and his positional awareness is superb.

For all strikers, being in the right place at the right time is not luck.

One of his main assets is that he can use both feet well so with his close control and speed of thought he is quite often half a yard ahead of most.

Think it was Robbie Keane that said after the Spurs game that Ledley King called Doyle the most difficult forward he'd faced all season. Think that says a lot as to why he is doing so well.

You must be watching a different player then than I am!! He has all these attributes, is immensely strong and aggressive and can take a knock. One of the best players I have ever seen play for Reading----and not a sicknote like Kitson

bedfordroyal thank you earley royal you beat me to it,Doyler will be a legend and i have heard from cork friends that Shane can be better than doyler,Kits is a good long ball player but i would pick doyler over kits always,i may be biased but he is a good all round footballer.

How would they know so much more about Long? Surely he's played far more football for us than he ever did for them.

Kits is not a "long ball player." He's a goos alround player who can link midfield and attack, take a decent ratio of his chances, win and hold the ball up while also being physical presence up front. That doesn't make him a "long ball player" it just means he's a good centre forward.

As for Doyle, well his alround game is fantastic. He has no real weakness to his game, apart from being a little too willing to fall over, and this season he's been very reliable infront of goal.

ROWY very simple really to understand his success ... as implied earlier he is not an exceptional footballer from a technical perspective and will not top the table because he is better than everybody else (Henry, Rooney etc), don't get me wrong he is good enough for this level but what he does well is ...

anticipates what might happen (forster never did this, was a ball to feet player and as far as he is concerned if it doesn't reach him, not his problem) Doyle will make 50 runs in a match anticipating what may happen, he may get on the end of it twice and score 1 in 4 of those times ... never lets his head drop just keeps doing it working on the percentages.

he's got an eye for goal, not afraid to shoot and has a high level of confidence in his own ability

these are the two key features in doyles game that result in him being one of the top scorers

He is only 23 and I read a report on Skysports where he says he is still learning and can get much better.
