Jerry Williams was, briefly, a pretty good right back. He also has to have had one of the most eccentric Reading careers position wise. From centre forward, to right back to right wing. Gary Peters was a good player playing in an ordinary team although he was awful when he first started playing for Reading. I also seem to remember reading one of his team mates (may well have been Eamonn Dunphy) saying he was the thickest bloke he had ever met.

Gary Peters, no question (er, as best full back, not the thickest person ever).

If you take the "it has to be Murty, he's succeeded in the premiership" line, then this thread -and all Spaceys other similar ones- become practically redundant.

Yes, but are we or are we not choosing the 'Greatest ever RFC XI'?

unfortunately you can only vote for what you have experienced/have heard a lot about. I really don't know much about Peters and I've been around for longer than a lot of Nobbers, though not long in the great scheme of things.

Although it has to be Murts, I was a big fan of Linden Jones, who could play right back and right wing. I remember his 2 goals knocking Sunderland out of the FA Cup.

Also, Steve Richardson, who was two footed, could play left back and right back, was quick, strong in the tackle, good servant to the club, and had an incredibly high pitched shout!

Probably has to be Murty to be honest, but Steve Richardson is also a decent shout

My recollection is that Richardson played on the left?

I think you are right, I used to think Colin Baille played on the left and Richardson played on the right!

I'll be doing a short list, though God knows how I'll find 8 decent right backs!

Can the person who nominated Johnny Walker explain what sort of player he was and what era did he play in?

Right, all the nominations I have so far are:

Graeme Murty
Andy Bernal
Ulises De La Cruz
Linden Jones
Gary Peters
Jeff Hopkins
Greg Halford (!!! I'll rule him out on account of not having played enough games so far!)
Dave Bacuzzi
Bobby Lenarduzzi
Andy Gurney
Colin Baillie
Jerry Williams (I would rule him out as he was mostly a right winger, wasn't he?)
Johnny Walker
Alan Maybury
John Halls
Martyn Booty
Steve Richardson (I'll rule him out as he was mostly a left back)

So my short list of 8 might look like this, anyone disagree?

1. Graeme Murty
2. Andy Bernal
3. Colin Baillie
4. Gary Peters
5. Linden Jones
6. Ulises De La Cruz (Not sure about this one, hasn't played enough games)
7. ???
8. ????

I don't know anything about Johnny Walker, Dave Bacuzzi and Bobby Lenarduzzi (other than he was a Canadian)........

Stevie Richardson was predominantly a left-back.

I don't recall Jerry Williams ever playing at right-back. I might be wrong.

Neither do I, but Cripple Creek claims that he did. For what it's worth, Michael Gilkes did play at right back too and he was pretty good at it, but nobody has nominated him purely because everybody thinks of him as a right winger.

No everyone thinks of Gilkes as a left winger surely!
