football365.com Only sentiment can spare Shorey a proper critique. As a Reading player, he was competent. Judged as an England player, or at least on the basis of what it is reasonable to expect from an England player, Shorey was mediocre.

it might not have been quite as bad as it looked on tv (I guess, having not seen the tv pictures) as that section was about half-full, and naturally those down the front took the chance to move back to better seats.RoyalChicagoFC Cracking pic, Rev'und.
Shame on the FA for not recruiting volunteer seat-fillers for Club Wembley sections --embarrassing empty red ponds visible on-screen throughout...

Katie Marsden Most of the articles and comments about him focused his wedding the next day rather than his England debut

Tails Shorey played to the plans of McClaren. Surely this is a clear observation. Last night was much about sticking to the basics and avoiding a moral destructive defeat. This would require the defence to be conservative and not 'buccunearing', what was shorey? exactly this, solid and conservative. When the option to overlap was the appropriate choice, he did so. It was Cole arrogance that was to the detriment of Englands quest for a victory, not Shoreys, perhaps Shorey should have showed a little more punch and DEMANDED the ball and if not, bollck Cole for being a selfish cnut.
But for what Shorey did, against the opposition, and what he probably was asked to do..
I would rate him a 7.

igoe agogo i don't recall either lineker or hansen mentioning shorey by name once in the build up, half time or closing comments (not even after pressing the red button).
I don't mean to get all blue tinted specs but surely a young lad making his debut on such a big stage merited at least a word.
Poor!!

2 world wars, 1 world cup From DAILY TELEGRAPH:
2/6/7
Nicky Shorey
Rating - 7
"An England debut the night before his wedding, but if he was nervous he did not show it. Confident in possession, but had to check the attacking qualities he shows at club level."
Pretty much spot on. One of the only papers to acknowledge him having to check the attacking qualities we know he has. A bit of a no-brainer bearing in mind we were playing Brazil but a good show by the daily telegraph.

Mind you, I went to the League 2 play-off final there last week, and club wembley was an embarrassing red hoop around the stadium, as only about 500 of the 15000 seat holders bothered turning up. Quite why that particular section was only half full when all the other club seats looked full is something of a mystery.
