Fezza
brendywendy LOL at the list of free transfers and undisclosed-alot of whom are being off loaded from relegated teams etc

im more than sure that coppell will be well on his way in trying to get players in, and as soon as the money is freed up as our premiere league mercenaries jump ship we ill get right on with the jiob of replacing them.

your fear seems to stem from the fact that it isnt plastered all over the papers which hasnt been our way under coppell
it aint panic time yet

I believe you said this in March as well!

why isnt there a yawn emoticon ?

SpaceCruiser LOL, "realists". The reality is that the club doesn't tell us what is happening behind the scenes, so you can't really slag them off for doing nothing when you don't know what is happening. That's reality for you.

I seem to remember a certain summer when nothing much happened and we were clearing out the deadwood. Then we signed a couple of unknown Irish players. Then in the last two weeks before the start of the season we brought in a few. And then you know what happened with that season. I seem to remember that on here lots of people were moaning about the transfer policy and that we seemed to be doing nothing.

Only you are conveniently overlooking the fact that it won't just be the dead wood that we are losing this summer.

How many of our quality players did we lose during the summer you are referring to?

FiNeRaIn hits nail of head with what he says!

I think the point is that if we want to make a good start in the Championship we need to sign players (certainly a left back and a right winger at the very least) and get them playing in pre season. If we don't we end up with the shower we had last term.

One of the key things about Readings success over the last few years has been our ability to play as a team, with players leaving or lacking in commitment if they do stay (Shorey) we need to bed in new recruits as soon as possible, not two days before the transfer window shuts.

londinium We need a lesser percentage of the market than average as on paper and (statistically too, I guess) we are the best team in the Championship and therefore need to buy the least amount of players.

If in those statistics you are referring to when we were last in the division, I do hope you realise that pretty much the whole midfield from that side will be missing.

Hoop Blah For the record, I'm not saying we should've signed players by now.

All I'm disputing is the notion that nothing happens in June.

I also feel that we're not the most pro-active in the transfer market, and we suffer for it, but I'm well aware that we don't hear of most things the club are doing behind the scenes to actually bring players in. I'm purely judging it on what the powers that be are saying and our previous history of attracting players of a sufficient quality to continuiously improve our side.

and that reaLOLism is it?

i still think that our side has been improved by rosenior, bikey, and matejovski out of last years signings
we have bought very good players in every window for years, broken our transfer record every window except the last.

im very happy with the way my club does its business
im not saying y'all cant panic if you want to-personally i couldnt care less what you bunch of doom mongers are doing.

i just reckon we are doing deals, and working towards getting a list of targets that has been agreed.
nothing will happen until we off load our players that want out-not because of our management-but generally the prem clubs wont do much till after the championships
happens every two years-
and since we are looking to sell to prem clubs-they dictate the time scale not us.

agree with fezza-i am worried that if its left too late it could well hamper our start to the season
but we do have a way to go till the sweden trip-

what can i say, its in my nature to be positive

I think so yes. I'm not screaming for signings now. I'm just pointing out that quite a few transfer do go through in June.

I also accept that we're not doing nothing. I do however have some reservations about how successful we are at bringing in players to improve the side and how successful we are at bringing in the players we target. It took us a hell of a long time to get in Fae, and Coppell himself admitted we wasted a lot of time and effort on Mensah when it then became apparent we stood no chance of getting him.

I agree those three add to the squad. Are they better than what was there previously? I'm not convinced yet, and it would appear Coppell isn't either, but I think all three will prove to be good signings in the future given a little bit of luck along the way. It's a shame that it took us to sign Halls, DLC and Halford before we found a right back to push Murty out of the team (which Rosenoir hasn't yet but I'm sure he will).

brendywendy im very happy with the way my club does its business

I agree, I like the way we go about our business out of the media glare, although the Lita, Halford, Fae and Mensah deals were harldy under wraps were they? We show a lot more decorum than most though, and I like that.

I just wish we were a little better at it thats all. We've spent £5m on two players who haven't really featured for the side before being shipped out at the soonest opportunity. Our previous two record signings have both contributed to the success of the club but both have soon wanted out, and neither would've been in our managers strongest XI last season. One was booted out leaving us no winger and the other, a centre forward, loaned out to apparently get him away from the squad despite the fact we couldn't buy a goal.

Yep, it's a trickle down effect. Until Chelsea start to spend the money and the rest follow suit we'll be left hanging on.

I'm not worried yet, I just don't have a lot of faith in our transfer dealings because of the recent track record.

agree that matejovski hasnt eclipsed sidwell as our best ever midfielder-yet
and rosenior is better than murty in my opinion-though without the leadership quality

bikey is head and shoulders better than anyone else in our defence IMO
and our midfield
and up front

Hardly our doing, I think. I seem to remember the Lita deal was leaked by Bristol City as an attempt to get more money from us and they didn't really want to sell him to us, they'd preferred to sell to a Premiership club.

Fae and Mensah both talked to the media themselves or through their agents.

Not sure about Halford, I can't remember that one.

For once Spacey your right AND make a decent point.

I'm not sure who leaked all the stories etc, but I think you're correct in that it wasn't really down to us, but that just goes to show that transfer activity does make it to the media even if we don't want it to. The same thing applies to other clubs.

I'd guess most of the gossip it comes from agents and clubs looking to sell or up the price a bit, but that would then mean that we'd probably see a bit more of our name being linked to players if we're just as busy as other clubs behind the scenes.

All conjecture of course, but if clubs and players leak stories on other clubs then I'm sure they'd do the same with us.

I'm pleased we don't go down the lines of other clubs by unsettling players through the press though.

i cant understand why reading havent signed ben watson from palace yet. about 2 weeks ago he made it clear he wanted to leave palace but by now if reading wanted to sign him they would of.
he would be an ideal replacement for harper if he leaves, he is also english and only 22 years old. he will be the new steve sidwell and would be a great signing to strengthen our midfield!!! :D

And any other midfield in the Championship... and be good for a Premiership club.. hence it is unlikely that he would want to come to Reading or we would be willing to pay the over inflated price that Jordan will demand.

FiNeRaIn Nice to see the excuses have begun already.

A few weeks will go by and still nothing, coppell will play it calm, the RTG's will back him and ridicule the realists, it will die down for a bit.
A month will go by and still nothing, coppell will say " we have a few targets", the RTG's will back him and ridicule the realisits, the realists will say " well fvking sign them then, we don't want " target's", we want signings". It will all die down for a bit.

The start of the season will begin, coppell will say " player's weren't available at the right price, money was available though", realists will be angry, RTG's will back coppell and laugh at the realists.

We get off to a crap start, lose at forest, get 3 points from our first 6 games and the team looks poor.
Coppell will say " we are happy with what we have got", the RTG's will agree, the realists will hit their head on the desks and say " here we go again".

Prediction in a nutshell.

Trust me
This is Coppell's last season..................and he's going to go for it. Big time!! Caution is a thing of the past this time around. He's going to spend ............BIG!!!

Reasons why we havent brought anyone.

1) Very little transfer movement in the Prem due to Euro 2008.
2) Dont know who is going (if any), so it is impossible to buy before knowing that.. exception of a winger or two to replace Blakey.
3) RFC do their business in private and not in the media.
4) Don't need a 4) as the first 3 will suffice.

2) I would hope and expect that the club have a far clearer idea than the media and fans as to who is likely to be leaving. That being the case, I would hope they are already working hard on lining up possible replacements. If they wait until someone has left before they even start looking, then they really are chasing the game and it is little wonder that they miss out.

Also, since they already know they need a right winger, hopefully they are well progressed in that particular search. The sooner they fix that problem, the longer time they can devote to finding the other players we may need.

3) But as Spacey has pointed out, many other clubs, players and agents are rather more free with their talk, so I would expect to hear at least a few whispers as to what RFC are up to, no matter how hard they try to keep things quiet.

he is only reportebly cost about £1-£3 million which wouldnt break readings bank and we could use the money from the selling of our other players to cover the costs. but QPR who r also interested in him can obviously offer much higher wages than what we can but out of most of the clubs outside of the premiership we have the greater chance to get promoted next season so thats an incentive for him to come to reading. ive seen no rumours that clubs from the premiership want him so he has a great chance of coming to reading aswell aparently reading were interested in buying him in january aswell

I suspect that Watson is biding his time to see just how ambitious QPR turn out to be. If they spend big he may well figure that they are more likely to reach the Premiership in 2009 than Reading are. Also he stays with a London club, rather than having to adjust to quaint Berkshire.

Dirk Gently You're missing an essential difference between us and other clubs.

We do transfer dealings in private, rather than via the media. The club absolutely hates it if word of what we are doing or trying to do gets out, so they do try really hard to keep all potential dealings secret.

Which is why you see a lot fewer rumours about what we are looking to do than you do with many other clubs, who either leak like a sieve or use the media to try and lure people away.

In that respect we copy Real Madrid's methods...
