Forever Reading
hutch Steeeeeevvvvvvoooooo, steeeeeevvvvvvooooooo, what a cracking keeeper he was for us, how we all loved it in the southbank when we`d chant his name and he`d give us a wave or thumbs up  . As good as he was in my opinion the best keeper I`ve seen in my time as an RFC fan has got to be Steve Francis, anyone else agree with me?

His successor Neil "shaka" Hislop was better IMO

Francis for me.

remember (apart from the Simod Cup run) he played mainly in an awful side. he'd make several great saves every game and we'd still end up shedding goals. if he'd played in a better team he'd be remembered as being even better than most remember.

Shaka was great but as he played in such a good team he was only called upon a couple of times a game.

Had some great keepers down the years (even had Sam Bartram on trial in the 1930s but the manager apparently insisted on trialling him as a half back or something despite Sam saying he was a keeper!).

George Marks was probably the best we had before the 1970s, wasn't he the chap we had who picked up an injury in the early 60s and then spent the rest of the game up front (no subs then) and scored twice to give himself the British record of the number of goals a keeper has scored during a match?

Steve Death still takes some beating in my mind but Shaka and Steve Francis run him close (seems to have a chance of being a tip top top tip top quality keeper for Reading your common name must begin with S!)

Stave Mautone was fine keeper and Gary Westwood wasn't too bad either. Early 80s also saw Alan Judge who I rated in his short spell with us.

Had some class loan keepers in recent years like Tommy Wright, Jim Leighton, Chris Woods etc.

Did Ron Springett play any games in goal for Reading in the late sixties?
I seem to remember him signing on a free from QPR. At one stage he held the record number of England caps for a goalkeeper.

I remember Woods being very much past it, and massive, when we had him. Any idea what his games/goals conceded record was for us?

Sorry about the last post, which I deleted. I thought you were talking about Jim Leighton!

Anyway, soccerbase has the answer and I looked it up. Chris Woods came on loan to us on 27th October 1995 and played just 5 league games. Looking at Reading's results, I guess these would be:

Football League Championship Reading 1-4 Ipswich 28-10-1995
Football League Championship C Palace 0-2 Reading 04-11-1995
Football League Championship Reading 0-1 Birmingham 11-11-1995
Football League Championship Reading 0-0 Barnsley 18-11-1995
Football League Championship Charlton 2-1 Reading 21-11-1995

So, in five games, he conceded 7 goals. Not very good, was he?!?

Hahnemann's conceded 6 in 4 games so far this season.

Arthur Wilkie was the keeper who scored twice in a game.

Shaka and Deathie were the best I've seen but Mautone was probably the best at saving pens.

I liked Tommy Wright. Shaka was our best goalie, closely followed by Steve Death I'd say.

Steve Francis is probably the best I've seen (IMHO would have been better if he'd been a bit taller but then probably would never had played for us)

Shaka next because he wasn't great with crosses (especially in his 1st couple of seasons)

Gary Westwood was good too, until he lost the plot and thought he was a sweeper rather than a keeper

I'm really really surpised that a number of posters put Steve Francis above Shaka Hislop. I'd put Whitehead above Francis myself and Hahnemann was better than both of them.

Probably because it was such a brief spell but I remember Leighton as the best 'keeper I've seen for us. We effectively resurrected his career but he was brilliant, which was actually quite a shock as he had become a bit of a laughing stock at Utd and seemed totally devoid of confidence.

Tommy Wright was my favourite loan goalkeeper to date.

Worst keeper ever to play in a Reading shirt must surely be Nick Colgan

Deathy
Far Canal
Streets He was better than that buck toothed tracksuit wearing woofter of a goalie we had anyway.

Harsh. Nicky Hammond was actually not a bad keeper, he just had terrible luck with injuries and managed less than 100 professional appearances in his career.

I was going to add that the only thing he really lacked was a few inches, but apparently I was wrong on this count:

"In October 2000, Hammond took over from John Stephenson to become Reading's Youth Academy Director, and was appointed the Club's first-ever Director of Football in September 2003.[1]im pretty sure he was hung like a horse."

Harsh, maybe...meh.

Mautone was much better and he wasn't scared to scuff his knees.

Crikey, that's better than what it was a couple of days ago! http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nick_Hammond&diff=203352673&oldid=203352665
