As stated on some of the posts, this contract has been in negotiation for a number of months. Not just now because of Marcus's injury.

Also Playing at Southend for Fed's was a factor as it did generate a lot of interest from other clubs. So Reading wanted to Tie this up sooner rather than later.

As for another year for Marcus.....well his current contract will give him an automatic year extention if he plays in more than 30?? games. Which is not good news for him at the momemt I suppose

Also could the club be wary that the last time Marcus got injured (not counting Jamie Youngs performance @ home to Stoke), Ashdown came in, played v well, his contract was up at the end of the season, and he decided to move on as he wasnt going to budge Marcus from the no1 spot. This time round, with an aging Marcus Federici has a real oppurtunity........

Looks like he might get a few games:

Steve Coppell is backing Adam Federici to fill the void left by Marcus Hahnemann following the news that Reading’s No. 1 could be sidelined for up to three months.
Hahnemann suffered a torn calf muscle during Royals’ 1-0 victory over Blackpool on Tuesday night and will almost certainly be out of action for a minimum of one month..

from the post.
