londinium That is a great record, I prefer the straight wins from the begining of the season record (13 isn't it)...always loved the fact that Manure fell short of it, hopefully they will again with the clean sheet record.

IIRC weren't Manchester United running neck and neck with us before they bottled it at 10?

And then finished 4th and won nothing?

They failed to beat Luton to end their run ..

On the basis that this is getting far too close for comfort, I think it's worth explaining that there are four different records here, and two are under threat.

Remember that Death kept clean sheets in the last 11 League games of 1978/79, and then conceded a goal after about half an hour of the first League game in 1979/80. There were no Cup games during the 78/79 part of the run, but League Cup round 1 was played before the start of the 79/80 League season. (Just to slightly confuse matters, the date of the League Cup 1st round 1st leg tie is wrong in all the record books I've seen, but the correct date was still before the League season started.)

(a) (The headline record) Steve Death went 1103 consecutive minutes in League games without conceding a goal. As already pointed out, van der Saar is less than two games away from breaking this.

(b) Consecutive League clean sheets - this time Death shares the record of 11 with a Millwall goalkeeper (1926) and Graeme Crawford of York City (1973, when they were still a League club), whilst van der Saar is one game away from equalling it. Incidentally, Crawford's total League run without conceding a goal was 1039 minutes, but I do wonder if the total length of the Millwall run was ever determined accurately (or if we've just assumed that it was less than 1103). One day I'll sort this out.

(c) Time without conceding in all competitions - the first game of the 1979/80 season was in the League Cup and Oxford (who, believe it or not, were in the Football League at that time) scored quite early on against Death. So in all competitions, Death managed 1096 minutes. I have no idea whether this is an all-time record, so I suggested that the club claim it and wait to see if anyone challenged! No-one has yet, as far as I know. Neither Manchester United nor van der Saar are currently on a long run without conceding in all competitions.

(d) Consecutive clean sheets in all competitions - again Death has 11, and so does the 1926 Millwall keeper. York's Crawford conceded goals in cup ties during his run, and so has van der Saar, so this record is also not under threat. However, Reina did equal this record a few years ago.

Of course, in any event van der Saar won't be able to set any Football League records (but for younger readers Manchester United's last relegation was more recently than Graeme Crawford's clean sheets run, so there's still hope).

Regarding the Millwall run, if anyone could provide a reliable set of times for the goals of these two matches:

http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=141657
and
http://www.soccerbase.com/results3.sd?gameid=141551

Sandwiched between them, as Cube states, are eleven clean sheets. I know it says 0-0 at half time but this is soccerbase I'm using.

I'd love to know.

Well, I decided to check some online newspaper archives on the Millwall issue without any success. I've seen some references to the end of the run, and the names of the goalscorers in the games immediately before and after it happened but nothing that helps with times.

Between about 1922 and 1930 Millwall's usual goalkeeper was J Lansdale, but he hardly seems to get a mention anywhere. I don't even know what his first name was, or for certain that he was in goal for the crucial period. However, he seems to have been highly rated so it probably was him that kept the clean sheets.

United have a defensive injury crisis and the Baggies are in form at home. C'mon Koren!

2150: Manchester United are less than 10 minutes away from breaking Chelsea's record for going the longest period of time in the Premier League without conceding a goal.

Last chance Saloon now. Come on Everton. 70 mins to score.

At least the might actually state Deathy's record now rather than banging on about the f'ing Premier League like nothing exists outside it.

Man U v Everton is the Monday night live game.

It's been moved, due to Everton's Cup replay. I think it's now the late Saturday live game.

Come on you Toffees!

Death was before my time, but it's seeing United go this close that hammers home how great a record it is.

If the record goes, it goes. It's a massive achievement, and not just about Van Der Saar, but his defence too.

Yesterday's Telegraph mentioned that Deathy held the English league record, although I got the impression from the article that Cech's record wa somehow more important!

If the record goes, I reckon we ought to drag Stewart Henderson onto the pitch in stocks at the next home game!!

It's all his fault!

Actually, it was all George Shipley's fault for not signing with us in that close season. He played every minute of that clean sheet run at the end of 78-79 and as soon as we started a league game without him, we concede.

Still don't know what Stewart Henderson was trying when he scored that one - was facing East and praying ?

The record can't go completely, because our's/Death's is in all competitions and Utd have conceeded in at least 1 cup match during this run iirc. It just happens that it was also a league record, because we didn't play any cup matches in the run.

Oh yes we did - we conceded one at Oxford - we did score 5 though.
