Legend, typically, is a short (mono-) episodic, traditional, highly ecotypified historicized narrative performed in a conversational mode, reflecting on a psychological level a symbolic representation of folk belief and collective experiences and serving as a reaffirmation of commonly held values of the group to whose tradition it belongs.

You can't think of Robin Friday? Are you 9 years old or something?

Not to mention Steve Death, Gilksey, Trevor Senior and Jamie Cureton. Could throw in Martin Hicks and Steve Hetske and Dariusz, or even Simon Shepard for a giggle.

Legends should be scarce. I don't think we have many and that's as it should be.

Parky, Murty, Death, Friday, Gilkes, Hicks, Senior, Blackman.

But you can add in a huge number of Greats who don't quite step up to Legend but are still worthy of note.

Gooding, Hahnemann, Ingimarsson, Quinn, Sonko, Shorey, Shaka, Sidwell, Harper, Little, Kitson, Wdowczyk, Convey, SHunt, Doyle, Caskey, Gunnarsson, Bernal, Cureton, Forster...

Thats only players from the last 20 years.

You may notice a theme hidden amongst all those names. Tell me when you see it.

I'm afraid I can't class Murty as a legend.

Does the number 106 mean anything to you? I probably should have included Oster, Long, Lita & Makin as well as Gunnarsson. But I thought that was pushing things a step too far.

Blimey, that's a bit obtuse. Anyway, 106 pah!

A couple of handfuls (at most) of good performances does not a Reading Great make...

No, but being part of the most successful Reading Team ever that broke the league points record and was promoted to the top flight for the first time in the club's 135 year history does.

We'll just have to disagree on that one.
