Royal Lady Of course it's Steve Coppell, but second place would go to Maurice Evans imo. He also had the nouse to sign up some great players who went on to do well and earn the club a few bob in transfer fees. Plus, he was a lovely man, and a gentleman, just like SC.

I'll go with that.
Pardew in and McGhee fighting it out for third place IMO, but then I wasn't around for any other contenders.

I respect that the obvious candidate is Coppell, bless him I also love the guy, and is my 'favorite'... but.

I confess being the 1 who voted Pards. You cannot deny he built the foundations of the team Coppell then went onto bring up. I would never dis-credit Coppell and say he had an easy job because it isn't an easy job, and he got us promoted, but it's fair to say Pardew established us, he brought in Harps, Shorey, Sidwell, Hahnemann, Murty, and they imo are the players who gave some of the biggest contribution to our promotion push, everyone else was a bonus but you cannot forget the foundations of that amazing team.

Coppell I vote with my heart but Pards with my head.

Barry the bird boggler My Top 5

1. Steve Coppell
2. Mark McGhee
3. Alan Pardew
4. Maurice Evans
5. Ted Drake

For the record I think that if Maurice Evans had been given the chance, instead of Ian Branfoot, then he'd have taken us higher and for longer...

McGhee and Pardew ftw.

Out of choice. You may have noticed he's being mentioned with most jobs that are coming up right now.

You make yourself look a total moron sometimes.

Shit he must be good if he's being linked with the likes of the mighty Colchester United. He left a sinking ship because he was out of ideas with the team he'd built - hardly the marks of a top manager.

^ I agree. Both Pardew and FSB took this club onto a higher level and by and large with some cracking football as well.
Copps is still the main man though

I don't think you'll find many who disagree with that statement. As shown by the poll.

If you can say Pardew didn't do anything, you obviously weren't there.

Why were people singing to Coppell at the start "You're not fit to wear the hoops", may it be because they missed Pards?
Why also, when West Ham came to our ground a few weeks later under Pards, did we shout "Judas" & sing "Pardew what's the score?", May that be because we were hurt and missed him/wanted to revel in winning against him because we loved him?
Because I reckon if we didn't give a oxf*rd about him we wouldn't of been singing, aye?

Coppell, is the best manager Reading have ever had, end of... but I think, if Pardew hadn't of walked out, he could have done simular things with Reading, although and to now big up Coppell, I don't think anyone will ever achieve at Reading Football Club what he achieved. Pardew may have got us into the Premier League but no, Coppell took us to the furthest point we will ever see for years, maybe never again?(Another argument  )

Steve had an amazing way of signing players too, he kept himself to himself, he wouldn't of done what Rodgers did with Tommy Smith and that's for sure. Doyle was an absolute amazing signing imo. Coppell is a gentleman, and losing Sidwell, losing Doyle, Shunt, etc is irrelevant, when we lost Coppell we lost our best player.

Who said Pardew didn't do anything?

He was extremely successful. His forte was taking average players and making them perform above their level by convincing them they were world beaters and making them fitter and harder working than anyone else.

Can't comment, Branfoot before my time, but I'd personally have Pardew edging McGhee out of 3rd place.

Not that this is a point for this thread. It's discussing the BEST not the second or third best.

You didn't miss much under Branfoot. Pretty direct football a lot of the time but he had his moments...the 13 straight wins in 85/86 followed by the inevitable promotion(his second promotion after taking over the side when Maurice Evans was sacked despite the team pushing for promotion at the time) and of course the Simod Cup.
There was the downside as well with the relegation in 87/88 and the desperately near further relegation in 88/89 or was it 89/90? which would have taken us back to the basement division

On achievment alone-coppell
on the sheer class of the bloke-coppell
on the mark left on the club- coppell and pards.
For player improvement-pards
coppell 1st,pards second but still hated. He could have taken us there, and all his own work, start to finish.but he oxf*rd it.cnut. Im still bitter.

Looking back now I wonder if Pardew regrets that decision, ditching us for West Ham. I mean he did end up winning promotion with West Ham and managing in the Premiersip for a few years with them and Charlton. But his career has gone full circle now. And he could have done what Coppell did.
