Hoop Blah Brendy, didn't you just use a few examples of decent play in the Boxing Day game as your evidence in the first place?

We're a direct team who don't really pass it. No shame in that, although I do think it's a limited approach that is more easily stopped by half decent teams.

It's shame for people who like to see attractive and skilful football and it's also a shame when it's a limited approach that is more easily stopped by half decent teams. In other words, not a lot to really be said for it!

Just to clarifiy, by 'no shame in that' I meant there isn't anything to be ashamed of in playing a more direct and safe style of football. I totally agree that as a fan it can be a shame (as in 'a pity') that this is the football we have to watch.

There are still things going for this style of football though. You only have to look at the results McDermott has got from playing it to see that. It's easier and safer to play this way, especially with limited resources, and Rodgers time in charge showed how difficult it can be to get a more attractive and technical style to work effectively.

I do think we're mixing it up a bit more now though, even allowing for the limitations in passing ability of our central midfield duo. If Le Fondre starts then I do think we're trying to play it into him far more often than previously and also HRK for all the stick he gets at times is a player who is more likely to put his foot on the ball and try to play.

I still think the full-backs could give us an extra dimension when it comes to breaking down sides that double up on the wide players. Cummings in particular is still very reluctant to offer an option in getting ahead of Kebe.

I think we're slowly getting towards a more multi-purpose style of football but it's certainly true to say that the default mode of a lot of the side is still to play the percentages.

i do think cummings lack of forward play is mostly down to kebe being less likely to slot in at the back if sean goes past him.

agree totally on us mixing it up more- its pretty evident.
obviously we are no swansea, but i have no wish for us to be so.

Yeah I'd agree with that (Vision that is). Le Fondre is certainly more of a link up player than I was expecting and does seem to get us at least trying to play a bit more football.

The Ipswich game didn't really follow that pattern though as I thought he really struggled to get on the ball, mainly because we kept knocking it long for Sonko to head clear.

I do think we've tried to be a little more cultured recently though, but that we're still mainly a direct team who work the percentages over and above a more cultured approach.

Up in the air to Sonko reminded me of a Watford 0-0 away game a few seasons back when we kept putiing in the air for Danny Shittu to keep heading clear.
